Managed server options to replace Google Drive and Google Photos? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kribensis · 2023-12-17 19:02 Hi, I want to de-Google and am looking for replacements. I don't have much data compared to some: under 200 GB total, since I decided to keep my 2 TB of video files local. Here's my use case: * A managed server, *not* a VPS or self-hosting. I'm not non- technical, but setting up a Linux server and managing patches is more than I want to do. * Windows, webapp, and iOS client that can sync files, mostly raw photos, to the cloud. * Online photo galleries that can replace Google Photos, display full- size JPEGs, and let me easily share them. PhotoPrism looks good, but I'm open. Immich looks too new and seems to still be under heavy development. * Must be an established name. As with Immich, it's gonna be hard for me to trust anything that just came out and doesn't have a large user base or community. With the state of web search and SEO spam in 2023, it's hard to find good info. I used some AI prompts to flesh out what I'm actually searching for (and came up with stuff like Nextcloud, Seafile, and [Sync.com](https://Sync.com)) but am at the stage where I can use input. My conundrum is that Nextcloud looks like the most popular choice, but seems to be quite janky based on many, many comments. Plus, they appear to outsource their consumer hosting to providers I've never heard of. Any advice would be welcome, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruff_lingel · 2023-12-17 19:24 Immich will meet your photo needs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simplixt · 2023-12-17 19:30 A managed server might exceed your budget, and will not include the maintenance of your docker apps ... if you even can use docker as you are not root. I would just start with a hosted nextcloud installation: [https://www.hetzner.com/de/storage/storage- share](https://www.hetzner.com/de/storage/storage-share) Nextcloud is quite good with photos nowadays, and there are plugins like Memories to extend the photo features even more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BinaryPatrickDev · 2023-12-17 20:02 Honestly just get a Synology. They have a really easy to use and very full featured photos app. It will also backup your iPhone and Android photos with the app. I currently manage Synology photos for several family members. I run Immich myself though. Immich is really fantastic, but if you are nervous about hosting something, it’s probably not for you. Same with photoprism. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eirikr70 · 2023-12-17 20:08 Give me 10 bucks a month and I host you ! But I recommend against Nextcloud (I won't host it anyway). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gongarher · 2023-12-17 20:16 What do you host instead of nextcloud? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-12-17 20:23 For photos? Synology photos if you have a Synology. If not then Immich. Nextcloud isn't really a photos tool. It's a Google drive replacement that has a photos tab, but isn't a full fledged replacement for Google Photos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bananenhaus23 · 2023-12-17 20:26 Managed Nextcloud on Hetzner with Memories-App should do the trick ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gongarher · 2023-12-17 20:41 For sure, I host nextcloud as google drive replacement but it has builtin funcions as calendar and social media stuff. Also immich works great but I need to store documents too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eirikr70 · 2023-12-17 21:05 I use a different app for each service I need * Immich for the pictures, * Vaultwarden for the passwords, * Radicale for the contacts and calendars, * ... Nextcloud is, as far as I am concerned, largely overweight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gongarher · 2023-12-17 21:25 I use several apps via docker containers too. Vaultwarden and Immich are on my stack. IMHO immich takes as much RAM as nextcloud does (2-3Gb in my case) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kribensis · 2023-12-17 23:33 Ah, is Hetzner's managed server offering [this one](https://www.hetzner.com/managed-server)? That *is* quite expensive. Is it literally five euros/mo for a terabyte on a VPS I set up myself, vs. 40/mo on a managed server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simplixt · 2023-12-17 23:53 Exactly, so a "managed server" might not be what you want, the target group are more enterprise customers who are running their eCommerce store on it, etc. Especially as for your usecase the maintenance of Linux itself is not complex. Just enable "unattended upgrades", use "key-based authentication", and only open ports you need (e.g. 443). For the "40€ per month" they will NOT harden your Nextcloud or Immich installation. If you want a hardened Nextcloud installation, just go with Nextcloud Hosting: [https://www.hetzner.com/de/storage/storage- share](https://www.hetzner.com/de/storage/storage-share) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-28 23:02 Does immich do syncing too?
