Literally any self-hosted music streaming that can read ratings from the metadata of the files it's streaming reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Milk_69 · 2023-12-16 19:05 IM GOING GODDAMN CRAZY HERE I have TENS OF THOUSANDS OF MUSIC FILES from 2 decades of listening to and collecting music. I have ALWAYS used MusicBee to manage them. I have been very meticulous about how I set up the metadata of my files, and *I have been rating them in MusicBee for over a decade.* There are literally thousands of files that are rated in musicbee- and musicbee saves those ratings into the metadata of the files with common MP3 tags. I primarily use my computer to listen to music, but it would be nice to have my music available on my phone. Usually, I just copy over specific playlists and listen to them in the car. I set up a home server this year, figured it was a good time to figure out how to make an actualy self-hosted streaming service actually happen without having to literally copy the files on my phone the way I used to. It would be nice to have access to the whole library at once, after all. I have tried MULTIPLE solutions and none of them work for me. The problem is ratings. NOT A SINGLE FUCKING THING I HAVE TRIED CAN READ METADATA RATINGS FROM THE FILES. I can't figure out WHY such a basic feature is missing from Plex, Navidrome, and Jellyfin, but it is and it is DRIVING ME FUCKING CRAZY. I've spent 2 decades rating my music and using those ratings to generate playlists to listen to, I genuinely don't understand what's so hard about importing those for self-hosted streaming. So here I am. Reddit, please, for the LOVE OF GOD there has to be a way to do this. What I need is the following: 1. A self-hosted music streaming service 2. It MUST have an android app, or there must be android apps that can interface with it 3. It MUST have the ability to read the ratings stored in the metadata of the files it will be streaming. It must, further, either: 1. Have in its app the ability to generate playlists based on the ratings of the songs it's given 2. Must be able to pass the ratings of the songs it streams to whatever app you chose, so that the app you're using to interface with the self-hosted streamer can make smart playlists 4. I would prefer that it be free but am willing to pay a little bit if needed 5. I would GREATLY PREFER that it not be something gerryrigged. I still primarily listen to music through musicbee on my computer, and I rate new music on that. I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO CONSTANTLY RUN A SCRIPT TO IMPORT THOSE NEW RATINGS. When I rate music in musicbee, I want that to be reflected by the streaming service. Please, there MUST be something out there that can handle this, right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Conscious-Fault-8800 · 2023-12-16 19:41 The 'usual suspects' are all multiuser and therefore a 'rating' can be different, depending which user rated it. I guess that's the Main reason why reading rating from tags is not widely supported. You may try symfonium with just a storage backend (webdav or samba share, theres plenty of containers that provide this ). Im not 100% confident it can read ratings from directly file access, but theres a free trial. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Milk_69 · 2023-12-16 20:01 Nope, it can't. I actually tried this a few weeks back. Set up navidrome, paid for Symphonium because I *thought* I'd be able to do something like what I want. I kind of can. I can import a playlist with all of my "favotired" songs, mass-select them, and heart them in Symphonium. But I can't mass-rate them with star ratings, I would have to rate them one-by- one. And it doesn't automatically update with new ratings, I have to manually create new playlists every few weeks and re-do all of it. Too much hassle. It's frankly ridiculous that the "usual suspect" don't allow this, because surely they know that when you're setting this shit up you *probably already have music with ratings right?* It would be trivially easy for Plex to offer the ability to read the metadata tagged ratings into ONE account that you specify. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Conscious-Fault-8800 · 2023-12-16 20:29 I Was suggesting symfonium without navidrome (symfonium acessing the files from a webdav/samba file share). Navidrome (and the subsonic API) is the limiting factor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Conscious-Fault-8800 · 2023-12-16 20:30 You can always use samba with a VPN. Or Webdav with https ---------------------------------------------------------------------- certuna · 2023-12-16 21:43 Storing ratings inside mp3 tags fell out of favour a long ago so there’s indeed not many apps/servers that support it. It’s also tricky for servers like Plex and Navidrome to support this, as neither of these servers writes tags to files, so when a user rates a song, cannot be stored in the tags, and then you end up with two sets of ratings, in the tags and in the server DB. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codenamek83 · 2023-12-17 00:19 I can understand and relate to your frustration. The bad news is that you won't find one perfect application with this feature. The good news is that you can DIY this with Navidrome. There are multiple methods. Simple Method: 1) You need an audio player on your PC (e.g., iTunes) that can generate Dynamic Playlists. 2) Generate 5 dynamic playlists, one playlist for each rating. Navidrome only supports ratings 1-5. 3) Export the dynamic playlists to m3u playlists and eventually import them into Navidrome. At this stage, you have your music library mounted to Navidrome and 5 playlists. 4) The Navidrome Web-UI doesn't allow setting mass ratings; therefore, you need a desktop client for Navidrome. 5) Download and install Supersonic (desktop client). 6) Locate your Navidrome playlists, select all the songs (or in batches), and set the rating. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Background_Milk_69 · 2023-12-17 01:28 What's odd to me though is that there isn't an on boarding script to read the pre existing tags and import them to a user in the app. For big libraries like mine it would make adopting these newer systems a LOT easier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dweymouth · 2023-12-17 03:40 If you have a little bit of knowledge with scripting, might I suggest using a Subsonic-compatible server (eg Navidrome or Gonic) and writing a script to iterate through your music files, read the rating from the tags, and then use the Subsonic API to set the rating (thus saving it to its DB)? As others have said, the main problem here is that all the popular music servers are inherently multi-user, with each user having their own ratings. You could bring it up as a feature request to Navidrome or Gonic though (Gonic may be more likely to add it; Deluan has a lot of big Navidrome changes on the docket at the moment). There's nothing stopping a Subsonic server from having a server-side-configurable option to pre-populate a given user account's ratings from the tags in the files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tolriq · 2023-12-17 16:00 Symfonium with WebDAV would do all of that and more.
