Assistance with Authentik reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 09:40 I've posted in r/authentik, I've tried discord... thought I'd give this group a try. I'm following the directions at [goauthentik.io](https://goauthentik.io) for installing in docker. I build the basic .env file according to their docs. I download the docker compose and spin up the container just fine. The guide then instructs you to visit: http://:9000/if/flow/initial-setup/ ...in order to set a password for the admin user (akadmin). However when I visit that address I get one of the two messages attached here, first the login screen (*which is not the screen they say should load*) followed by the error no matter what I enter. I've removed the folders/volumes/networks/images/etc... and reloaded multiple times. I get this every time. I've seen the guide at [ibracorp.io](https://ibracorp.io) come highly recommended but I get the same thing with it (*as well as another issue*). I've got 20+ other containers running just fine (*irrelevant perhaps*) and I'm at my wits end. I had this running just fine in the past on another server but this time around it's kicking my butt. https://preview.redd.it/fit9gw7nmm6c1.png?width=835&format=png&auto=we bp&s=c13863dddc1f5379a0c0e4f91ad870e7ffda64fa https://preview.redd.it/rcps9x7nmm6c1.png?width=1006&format=png&auto=w ebp&s=686ec4eb10a10417d112ef9f46753ea53552e18e ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SmellsLikeHerpesToMe · 2023-12-16 09:56 I have no experience with this app (I should though), but it seems to me like it already has some form of admin credentials stored somehow. Have you double checked you’ve completely cleared out the image/containers/volumes/local folders that the container could be using? https://github.com/goauthentik/authentik/issues/4033 This bug seems like the error is thrown when you try to set an admin credentials when one already exists. The user mentioned after around 2 minutes it would begin to throw this error. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 10:11 It does have a password for the database pre-set but the first screen you get at the URL I mentioned is supposed to present you an opportunity to create a password for the user "akadmin" but that's NOT the screen it goes to, and the screen it DOES go to doesn't take akadmin or any others as a login nor does it let you set a password or anything. I've also confirmed on a completely different machine that http://:9000/if/flow/initial-setup/ goes to the wrong page... see image above. The page in question seen in the image connected to my OP is asking for an email and will not accept only a username.... including "akadmin". There is no default email or anything. I'm really at a loss. I appreciate the reply all the same :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SmellsLikeHerpesToMe · 2023-12-16 10:16 For sure. And you’re confident this database is fresh? All the above signals to me like somehow there is a user already created/somehow the configuration already exists for the admin account. A good test would be to setup a secondary environment, questioning/ensuring every piece is new. Everything I mentioned above, including ensuring the database is freshly spun up/not being configured on first start. Not sure of your level of expertise with docker but presumably you’re pretty far along since you’re setting up auth in front of your services, sorry if this seems like basic stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- revereddesecration · 2023-12-16 10:16 https://goauthentik.io/docs/installation/automated-install ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 10:19 There may well be... the the only pre-created user their documentation refers to is akadmin and they don't indicate any preset password either for it. And their directions for setting an initial password for that user does not match what the software actually does. As mentioned in my last reply I did in fact set up a secondary environment on a completely separate system and got the same result. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 10:20 I've tried all those bootstrap options as well to no avail. Tho to be fair I have not tried them on the 2nd test system yet. Might give that a try. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 10:22 Sorry, I should add that the only login screen that comes up is the one I attached to my original post. It will NOT accept only usernames... If I type in akadmin or anything else that issn't an email address it simply doesn't accept it so the preset bootstrapped password is useless. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 10:27 At first I didn't catch the fact you can set a default EMAIL for that user. That might do the trick. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SmellsLikeHerpesToMe · 2023-12-16 10:30 When you get the webpage shown in your second pic with admin login, password and repeat password, you’re filling this in with your own credentials right? Your own email and your own password? In the video linked here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1qUbrk4Yc8 The creator enters his own credentials and is brought to login page. Again, apologies if this isn’t helpful. Looking at the compose file, the Postgres db and Redis db are configured upon running the docker-compose up, but ensuring you’ve deleted the database volumes is important when starting fresh. By default, these volumes should be named “database” and “redis”. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 10:32 I've tried all sorts of things, including my own credentials. However it was pointed out there is a way to preset an email for that admin user that I had missed. That got me in. I'm going to go back and keep poking to see if I can figure what the heck is going on but at least now I can get it going. Thank you:) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 10:33 Still uncertain what the underlying issue is but the ability to preset an email for the admin user did the trick. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BruderSir · 2023-12-16 12:09 What a coincidence. Yesterday I had the exact same error and tried to remove the redis and postgres volume to definitely get a fresh install, but to no avail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-12-16 14:20 https://github.com/Haxxnet/Compose- Examples/tree/main/examples%2Fauthentik https://blog.lrvt.de/authentik-traefik-azure-ad/#docker-compose ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-16 20:14 Thank you but those two links are exactly the same as other sets of instructions that where not working. I finally got it working other ways. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BeryJu · 2023-12-16 21:00 The second picture is the one that the `initial-setup` flow should show, although I agree that we should add some more labeling to show that that is the case. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- voidsyourwarranties · 2023-12-17 00:15 Can you share how you got it working? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-17 01:20 I learned that I was dumb. At some point while teaching myself the basics I introduced a typo so I had two copies of some of the files. I kept not noticing and wondering why my changes where seeming to have little effect. HOWEVER... later in my process I did discover an easier thing: You can pre-set an admin username/email/password. Once I had my other issue sorted out this was much easier than the other more manual way of performing that initial setup. https://goauthentik.io/docs/installation/automated-install ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BruderSir · 2023-12-17 18:29 How did you preset it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-17 19:46 Did you look at the link in my comment? You add those to your docker compose file... whichever ones you want to add. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BruderSir · 2023-12-18 11:18 Oops, my bad. I didn't look closely enough. Thanks for pointing that out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fliberdygibits · 2023-12-18 13:08 My apologies, didn't mean to be snappy there... it's been one of those projects:) Hope that helped!
