Dumb question how to use Immich? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Glum_Movie1083 · 2023-12-16 01:29 Immich shows up around here frequently in "google photo" alternative but when I installed it on android device, first thing it asks is server endpoint? Can I not use it to browse photos locally first and add server endpoint at later point? Why is it a requirement to connect to server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-16 01:32 You need to run Immich as a serve instance on a device, then the mobile app can connect as a client to it. Simply read and follow the Immich documenation: https://immich.app/docs/overview/introduction > Why is it a requirement to connect to server Because thats how this works. If you want to discuss what makes sense or not about Immich -> https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Glum_Movie1083 · 2023-12-16 01:38 I just want to run this without internet too when there is no signal. If you connecting to server endpoint- you need internet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ethereal_g · 2023-12-16 01:45 You don’t need to connect to the internet, you just need to connect to the server you’re hosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-16 01:54 > If you connecting to server endpoint- you need internet That is not correct. You need a connection between that client (maybe your phone?) and that server (maybe your PC?). No internet involved. Again -> https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clintkev251 · 2023-12-16 02:24 The primary purpose of the Immich app is to back up your photos to an Immich server. It's not intended as a local photo viewer app. Plenty of other options out there for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thaneekl · 2023-12-16 02:57 you can connect by intranet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ouity · 2023-12-16 04:17 It depends on what you mean by no signal. I have a "server" in my house. A server is just any given computer that you use for that purpose. So I don't need access to the broader internet to access my "cloud" storage. My cloud storage sits in my living room. My phone connects to the server, but all I need to accomplish that is a wifi connection when I am on my home network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Glum_Movie1083 · 2023-12-16 07:37 That's why I'm confused there is assumption most say its Google photo alternative. If it's not photo viewer then it's not alternative ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-12-16 08:51 Sounds like you don't understand fundamentally what Immich is. Also it is a photo viewer but you have to log into a server first just as in Google photos you have to log into an account first. Once you do that you can view photos on your phone and server without Internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Glum_Movie1083 · 2023-12-16 10:05 That is not true. You do not have to login to google photos to see your files. https://voonze.com/how-to-use-google-photos-without-an- account-and-what-it-is-for/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- simpleFr4nk · 2023-12-16 10:29 /lostredditors ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clintkev251 · 2023-12-16 13:42 Even your own article says “The fundamental pillar of Google Photos is its backup in the cloud”. Immich replicates this functionality ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HTTP_404_NotFound · 2023-12-16 22:36 My advice for you- This isn't the app you want, nor the subreddit you want to ask for support in. And- for the record, google photos does not work if you are not logged into it. It works on your phone, because its a google app, install on your android phone, running a google OS, for which are you are logged into. It stores your photos in google's cloud, under your account.
