Need mini build specs for self-hosting reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jesseleh · 2023-12-15 22:07 (no clue if I have the right flair here, but here we go) I am officially sick and tired of webhosting companies and the cost associated for decent services so I've decided to go the Thanos route and do it myself. And now that I've done some digging on how to set up self hosting for a website and some light lurking here, my next hurdle is to find something to actually be the server. My main PC is turned off every night, so something small that I can have on my desk running 24/7 and remote into when I need to would be ideal, but I have no ideas what kind of specs would be best for what I need. Some bullet points for what I need: \- Basic webhosting for various projects (game mods/graphic novel - download/image heavy) \- Host for a public web app I'm building \- Discord bot hosting \- MySQL Database hosting \- Possible media streaming with friends What's good CPU/RAM specs for these applications? Storage is the easy bit here, (I'm not afraid to upgrade later if needed. SSDs are cheap), but do I need to get a Windows server OS? Is that even a thing anymore? I haven't a clue, and knowing me if I try to do this without input, it'll be over-engineered and overly-expensive. I've been looking at NUCs and other mini-PCs so far, but it's overwhelming when I don't have target specs. Also any free/single pay software, or other self hosting tips that could be useful to me would be wonderful. Budget isn't really an issue. Once I have a target I can just save up for it, I just need that target. Sorry for my rambling, and thanks for any help!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-15 22:46 Subs like /r/HomeServer and /r/Homelab and /r/BuildaPC are more focused on hardware. This sub here is about **selfhosting software services**, not about hardware purchase or upgrade advice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jesseleh · 2023-12-15 23:11 Thanks, I wasn't sure of that either. I'll delete this and try one of those place.
