Would a 2388g or 5900X be better for a gaming server that hosts 70 people? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigBoiSouth · 2023-12-15 17:20 So the game in question is Arma 3. From my research it is very CPU hungry on the server side of things and is very bad at multi- threading. I am trying to decide if a 5900X would be better than a 2388g for my purposes. Also I would be hosting a max of 3 instances on the server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bigmanbananas · 2023-12-15 17:37 Not from experience, but Xens are designed for lower core speeds and ultra reliable behaviour. But the 5900x (I do have one of these running virtualisation) have quite high core speeds, and single scores can get very quick. I can't speak to the Xeon's efficiency, but the 5900 range on a power to work ratio isn't bad at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the_naysayer · 2023-12-15 18:38 Xeons aren't going to have amazing single core performance, you may be better served by an I7 or I9 with better single core speeds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raunhofer · 2023-12-15 21:15 I've been running arma/ofp servers for decades. They indeed do prefer single threaded performance, but Arma 3 Server is not CPU hungry on modern CPUs. I'm currently running the servers on 14th gen Intels. At the moment one server has some players and the CPU load average seems to be 0.16 on a virtual machine with 12 threads. Essentially the same as idle. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alman12345 · 2023-12-15 21:34 The Xeon actually apparently fares better in core to core performance so if your application is lightly threaded then it should perform better. The 5900x is no slouch though, and given how much cheaper it is you might enjoy it more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Frozen_Gecko · 2023-12-15 22:55 The 2388g boosts higher than a 5900x ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WaxwingSlainL · 2023-12-15 23:56 Arma 3 server works in exactly the same way as client does. It's extremely dependent on single core performance and memory speed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bigmanbananas · 2023-12-16 03:05 Looks like it has a slight edge, yes. OK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cyberlytical · 2023-12-16 15:01 You're going to run into bandwidth/ latency issues long before you run into a CPU bottleneck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigBoiSouth · 2023-12-16 15:08 How much bandwidth would I require? I’m at 1 Gbps connection atm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cyberlytical · 2023-12-16 15:11 Upload and download? Cause in this case, you need high upload speeds. Plus, you'll need a good firewall/router that can handle the load and do so quickly. Also as someone with 1 gig up/ down, people connecting to you will likely never get anywhere near that. I'm currently fighting my isp and the fact I can't get more than 50 mbps back to my servers. Even on the same internet/ leg from my brother in laws house. And it's not a hardware issue. Just keep that in mind ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darkcyde_ · 2023-12-16 22:40 Headless clients? I've played arma/dayz (hasn't everybody?) but I've never heard of headless _clients_. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raunhofer · 2023-12-16 22:42 Essentially you can offload some of the calculations to a physically separate CPU.
