I need an app for logging myself reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aim_Fire_Ready · 2023-12-15 14:17 Here's the deal: I work alone both at my Clark Kent job and on my Superman side gigs. I switch among several disparate topics on a daily basis: business, tech, mechanical, accounting, and more. What they all have in common is that I need to record something: I did X on system, or I saved an image, or a document, or I learned something new...the list goes on. The key is that I need to search through them later, or better yet, be reminded about it. How can I track all these different formats in a central place accessible from multiple Windows & Mac computers and mobile devices (all iOS here)? Required features: 1. Timestamp 2. Tags 3. Reminders 4. Search Some ideas off the cuff: 1. Evernote/Notion/Obsidian 2. iOS notes (the web app is tolerable) 3. A blog FWIW, I already have Nextcloud, but I only use it for file syncing. I have a homelab with ESXI and Docker, but I need a low maintenance option. I need to have separate accounts for work and personal, but I'd like to use the same tool for both for consistency. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tcassaert · 2023-12-15 14:30 Aside from the reminders, I think [Memos](https://github.com/usememos/memos) could help you. It let's you write down simple short or long messages that you then can view in a timeline like you know from social media. It also has tagging support and has a good search. What exactly are you expecting from the reminder part? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aim_Fire_Ready · 2023-12-15 14:36 Thanks. I'll check out Memos. Reminders: sometimes, it's something I learned about that I want to keep fresh in my mind so that I can develop a habit of it. Sometimes, it's something that needs to be done at a certain point in time, like I'm currently doing EOY tax prep for my business, like getting tax info on Independent Contractors to file 1099s in January. I collect LOTS of information, but I feel like it's sand slipping through my fingers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrXmuzzz · 2023-12-15 14:46 Excel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheWicklowWolf · 2023-12-15 14:51 Kimai ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aim_Fire_Ready · 2023-12-15 16:06 Haha, the answer to everything and the solution to nothing! I've found the limits of Excel/Google Sheets over the years. This is definitely beyond those limits! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- muvijw · 2023-12-15 20:17 I use selfhosted [Hedgedoc](https://hedgedoc.org/) for noting and saving between multiple plattforms. With Tags you can even seperate most of the stuff, it needs basically no resources (running this on dualcore tiny at home, and its not even turning the fan on) and you have markdown as language! Other than that i would vote and appreciate plaintext! It is a great start with selfhosted Git options. or similar. Also no resources and mostly no distractions with fancy pancy editors. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-15 21:26 I depends mostly on how you want to use the information after recording it. Obsidian's daily journalling might work well? Memos might work? I think I'd be inclined to use a journalling app and tag entries based on context.
