What services should I run on my NAS and which should I run on rpi/pc reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Haliphone 路 2023-12-14 23:21 Continuing on from my last post: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/c omments/18bj44u/setting_up_a_local_domain/ I've committed myself to installing Caddy and Pihole to manage my local domains. After doing a bit of googling I decided to host them on an rpi I've got as my Synology NAS 'owns' ports 80 and 443,and it sounded like a lot of faff to get Caddy to work. This led me on a new merry adventure as I learned how to backup my pi's 馃槀 (was not merry at all). Now that that is done and I'm ready for the next step I'm wondering if there are other services I should be running on other devices instead of on my Synology? Or does it not really matter (aside from processing power, of which I think jellyfin is the most intensive)? Currently the NAS is hosting portainer, homarr, jelly fin and my arr stack. After I've got my local domains working I was going to further spin up mealie/tandoori, immich, open project, homeassistant, and calibre. One Rpi is currently running klipper, and this is the one I'll run Caddy and pihole from - or should pihole be on the NAS? The other rpi is running the lumicube software and not much else. I do have an old PC I could install Linux on - but I don't think I quite need it. Yet. (Incidentally is that the easiest way to go about it with an old PC? Install Mint or DietPi and run dockers from it?) As always thanks in advance, I seem to have picked up a fulfilling wee hobby, that has me constantly searching for answers 馃槀 Does this ever end? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root-node 路 2023-12-15 00:06 I have 5 containers on my Synology and 12+ on a dedicated host (Intel NUC). The containers on my Synology are the ones that are very important and must be running before the rest of my network as my NAS is the first device to be powered on in the event of a power failure. For example, I have BookStack hosted here as it contains all the documentation to get my home network working in case of an issue. The other important container is Vaultwarden as it contains all my passwords. The other important one (for me) is my MQTT server. A lot of devices to to that, so it too needs to be up. Look at your specific container needs and where best to put them. You can always move your containers if need be later (this also tests your backup/restore process) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yummy_XD 路 2023-12-15 02:33 Essentially, what this person said, have a rough idea what your chain of responsibilities is. Mine is router > homehub (rpi) > k3s cluster (3 rpis). I like having my Homehub being a rpi, in fact mine is a pi 3 B+, because it's sips electricity. This means if I want to reduce power draw, I can start with the more energy hungry devices. This also translates to uninterruptable power supplies, as your critical apps can run for longer on battery backup in the event of a power outage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthewpetersen 路 2023-12-15 03:10 Here's some suggestions [dockerholics list](https://petersem.github.io/dockerholics/#dockerholics- application-list) I'd install Ubuntu server on your old PC, then docker. Rpi's are ok, but pretty limited. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dibu28 路 2023-12-15 05:28 https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Haliphone 路 2023-12-15 09:34 Thanks for the list, but the question wasn't really 'what services to install' but 'what should go on which device'. Defo some stuff getting added from that list though 馃槀 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Haliphone 路 2023-12-15 09:37 Ah so there is no benefit to having say immich or the arr stack on the NAS itself because it's 'storing' the files that will be used? Thinking about importance - the pi hosting caddy looks to be the most important so I'll ensure pihole is on it too. I can't guarantee it'll power up before the NAS but it may. I dunno - it's a whole fuzzy zone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root-node 路 2023-12-15 09:40 Correct, I have Jellyfin on my NUC that has a mounted volume to the media files on my NAS for indexing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Haliphone 路 2023-12-15 10:21 Ok I won't/don't need to overthink it then ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthewpetersen 路 2023-12-17 03:22 I'd repurpose the PC with Ubuntu, then put it all on there.i have used rpi's, but find them too slow
