Photo frame service reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- harrenkyym · 2023-12-14 16:07 Hi, everybody. I've been doing my research but I haven't found anything that satisfies me. So basically I'm looking for something that works exactly like Frameo ([https://frameo.net/](https://frameo.net/)) but without any security conern, using my own NAS (maybe somewhere on the net there is a good docker image I can deploy but I haven't found it yet \^\^). Frameo also have two big limitations: \- 10 pics at the same time. - I don't want limitations \- Videos sent can be up to 15 seconds... The idea is to send pictures to my grandma, who's living in a little town hundreds of km far away from here, and those pics should kind of popup immediately on the display. I've read a lot about using Nextcloud, many containers like piwigo, etc. But what I really really really want is that functionallity of displaying the picture right away. It receives it via mail or somehow via app, and, pop, image on the frame. Or images slideshowing. I don't know. Exactly like Frameo buttt without the limitations and the external server owned but I don't know who. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TIL_IM_A_SQUIRREL · 2023-12-14 16:40 I created a service around this. I know you're looking for something self hosted, but in general, here's how it works: - RPi listens to a mqtt topic - User sends an email to a specific address that lands in Amazon SES (Simple Email Service) - SES dumps the email to a S3 bucket, triggers a lambda function that extracts the images from the email and writes them to a separate S3 bucket - MQTT message gets published to the topic that the RPi is listening on. - RPi receives MQTT message which contains a list of URLs that it should fetch the images from - RPi downloads the images and displays them on the screen (I'm using feh as the display tool. For a single user, you should be well within the free tier of the relevant AWS services, or maybe it'll cost you a few pennies a month. If I were going to roll my own, I'd probably skip all the email stuff and have the flow work like this: - RPi listens on MQTT topic (you can do this across the Internet but be sure to use certificate authentication and TLS) - When you have new images to share with the player, you post a MQTT message to the topic - RPi pulls the images and displays them - Grandma is happy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Professor_Shotgun · 2023-12-14 19:02 Why don't you build your own? Use a single board computer, a small SSD and a spare HDMI display... Add FEH on startup and you have a nice photo frame.
