Reminder to change your logins before you retire a old domain reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edlace · 2023-12-13 22:00 I just received a mail from instagram to my catchall mailbox on a domain I bought about 3 months ago, telling me that a new device logged in…. As I don’t have instagram, I quickly realized, that a user registered instagram with a Mailadresse from the domain that now belongs to me. I could easily take over the account at that point (which I don’t). So I just want to remind you all to go trough your accounts before retiring a domain (if you also used it for email), since the person controlling your mailbox/mailadress can make quite a lot of damage….. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-13 22:51 It's sad when common sense has to be a PSA. Even enterprises fall for these forgotten domains sometimes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edlace · 2023-12-13 22:53 True… but yet here we are, I get mails from active accounts… 😬 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-13 22:56 The people owning an .ml TLD can sing you an even better song when they get all the email meant for the .mil TLD because of a typo. Classified documents, sent via mail, to a typo TLD … good ol’ US of A! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Edlace · 2023-12-13 23:12 You would think if you send classified docs via mail, some would at least use pgp…. But seems like that’s not always the case… ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shadoodled · 2023-12-13 23:53 I had quite a few of these, not just old accounts but signups as well. I mean why would you sign up to a service with an email you don't have? Just recently, someone signed up for an Apple ID using an email under a domain I own. Poor soul tried to resend the verification email 7 times (sorry Dana). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LastTreestar · 2023-12-14 00:48 They were trying to get you to click the link. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- operator207 · 2023-12-14 01:13 I mean, at least use something that let's you use links you can revoke access to like OneDri..... *checks subreddit* err... Nextcloud! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-14 03:08 This is why I have a policy of keeping even silly domains indefinitely if they could have been used for email — just in case I forgot about an account I once had. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neumaticc · 2023-12-14 05:41 hey, dana here. I'm in your walls ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shadoodled · 2023-12-14 05:51 please confirm your email address ---------------------------------------------------------------------- climateimpact827 · 2023-12-14 16:20 How do you find a domain that is both pronounceable and still free? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-14 23:11 > How do you find a domain that is both pronounceable and still free? That's a very, very broad question that is almost impossible to answer. A domain for what? My private email? Projects? Businesses? Blogs? Memes? If it is a domain for a person, you plan it around the person's name along the format doe.com, johndoe.com, jdoe.com, johnd.com, johnfdoe.com, jfdoe.com, etc. If it is a for a business, you typically go with the business name that you already have. If you are picking a new business name+domain combo, you just think really hard and try to be creative, perhaps use some research tools\*. There is also the matter of having a 'wishlist' of domains that are already registered and that you're keeping an eye on. I got several relevant (to me) domains because the owners forgot why they registered them and let them lapse. \* Research tools: basically, you can pull the root zone for .com to get a list of all registered domains, then use some big data tools to trim it down to size, then use your brain (or a friendly AI chatbot) to generate relevant domains, then check them against your list of registered domains programmatically to see if any ought to be available. The biggest advice I can give you for domain hunting is: never, *ever* search your desired domain on a website unless you are ready to buy right this instance. Use telnet (or the whois package) to talk to the registry whois servers directly for domain availability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neumaticc · 2023-12-15 03:55 dana1984@gmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Psilan · 2023-12-15 08:58 I have a well-known company@gmail address which is misspelt. I get job applications, visas, passport scans. Plus constant signups for everything from Facebook to service signups. People are just stupid.
