A remind é of why we self host reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guhcampos · 2023-12-13 15:46 This guy has 7 days to Download and backup 250TB of data. How? Whatever. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guhcampos · 2023-12-13 15:47 Argh blame the typo over Apple keyboard incapacity to multi language correctly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flicman · 2023-12-13 16:30 Self-hosting would have hurt that journalist \*more\*, given that the FBI came in and took all of his electronic devices. I've been saying it for years and I'll never stop till I get it - we need space-swarm hosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- guhcampos · 2023-12-13 16:36 Granted, that’s true lol, but I could argue that self hosting must follow the same principles of any data storage, and he should have an offsite backup. In my case it turns out my offsite backup is the cloud, no biggie. I don’t advocate against cloud storage at all, I’m not worried about privacy or government espionage, just that I can look at my pictures when I get old. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Foxfyre · 2023-12-13 16:40 I'm all for self hosting, but self hosting wouldn't have fixed this problem. He was relying on cloud backups because his other storage was seized. Which means any self hosting would have been seized too, unless he was self hosting at an alternate location. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcabines · 2023-12-13 16:55 >we need space-swarm hosting Do you mean distributed object storage like [Storj](https://www.storj.io/)? I wish there was a similar system for smaller hosts where we dedicate a few TB to the swarm, but get a percentage of that space to use on the network. Like a community that comes together to be each other's offsite backup, but without bringing any money into the equation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Outrageous_Kale_8230 · 2023-12-13 17:05 This is exactly why I'm interested in participating in Storj, use the tokens to buy rent space in the swarm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcabines · 2023-12-13 17:08 The last time I looked into setting up a node I got the impression you needed to dedicate a few hundred TB before it made any sense to do, plus it'll eat up your bandwidth. I was on a quota until very recently, so maybe that was what ultimately put me off. Do you know how many TB you have to dedicate to the network to afford putting 1 TB onto it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wsamh · 2023-12-13 17:52 I'm mean in general, you never want all your data in one plan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-12-13 18:15 The real answer isn't self hosting. The FBI took all his stuff so it would be all gone anyways. The real answer is better laws. Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon have become so integrated in our daily lives that they need to be treated a public utility. Laws should be put in place to require an appeals process for paid account bans, as well as a formalized method to actually interact with a human in cases like the parents who were following their Dr's orders. Companies like Google have way way to much control. I have over 250K photos backed up in Google Photos from the day my kids were born. Google could at any moment decide I'm done and ban my account. I have no recourse, no appeal, no way to get it back. All the photos of my kids for more than a decade are gone. I self host to help reduce that risk, but we need to think about the greater good. There are probably millions who store everything in Google Drive. We need better laws. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-13 18:26 No one is forcing you to use Google. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-12-13 18:31 [https://tenor.com/view/the-point-over-your-head-stupid- gif-9513667](https://tenor.com/view/the-point-over-your-head-stupid- gif-9513667) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-13 18:37 No, you don't get that if no one is using Google, Google becomes irrelevant. No regulation required. You give Google power by using it to store all your pictures, this is your own fault and no one needs to help you with your problem when you can simply store your pictures **anywhere** else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Frozen_Gecko · 2023-12-13 19:04 Do you mean literal orbiting datacenters in outer space, or am I missing something here 😅 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flicman · 2023-12-13 19:27 No, I mean satellites in space. Little ones. Lots of then. Space ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flicman · 2023-12-13 19:28 Yes. That is exactly what I want. Servers in fucking space. Swarms of them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Frozen_Gecko · 2023-12-13 19:42 I love it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- violet-crayola · 2023-12-13 21:51 Selfhosting is a nonstarter for 95% of the population . u might as well stop trying ---------------------------------------------------------------------- violet-crayola · 2023-12-13 21:56 Um so his devices got seized - and at the same time google revoked his plan? As if by pure coincidence? I thing google got told to nuke his data for sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- violet-crayola · 2023-12-13 21:58 I think u would have to host a copy in China or russi a for us gov to not be able to seize it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Foxfyre · 2023-12-13 22:00 Great theory....except it actually WAS just coincidental. Google turned off the unlimited plan for everyone, not just OP It sounds like OP was just using SO much space that after turning off unlimited Google was just basically like "yeah, f\*\*\* that" in regards to OP's data. It was 237 TERABYTES, after all. Small chance that your theory is still correct, but I doubt it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkirkcaldy · 2023-12-14 01:50 His entire life’s work wasn’t backed up anywhere? If your data is only stored in a single location you should be prepared to lose it at any point. Especially if you use google. I have zero sympathy for anyone who stored huge amount of data on google cloud under the pay for 5 user get unlimited storage “hack”. Everyone knew it was “too good to be true” and if this was business critical then there is zero excuse for not having a backup. Or for not using a company that doesn’t have a history of bending their customers over and fucking them with kitchen knife. This site exists for a reason. https://killedbygoogle.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MalcolmY · 2023-12-14 16:31 The latency is going to suuuuuck tho ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MalcolmY · 2023-12-14 16:33 I agree, we are an extreme minority in our respective populations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flicman · 2023-12-14 17:20 a small price to pay for secure backups.
