[Hello World] Introducing Glasskube (v0.13.4): Open Source Deployment Automation tool to simplify self-hosting your favourite Open Source Tools on Kubernetes ๐ŸงŠ reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekubernaut ยท 2023-12-13 15:03 Hi r/selfhosted, I am Louis, Co-Founder of [Glasskube](https://github.com/glasskube/operator) and we are proud to introduce the Open Source project that we have been working on for the past couple of months. โ€‹ >We are just at the beginning, so please let us know if you find any bugs, we will try to fix everything as fast as we can. โ€‹ [Glasskube](https://github.com/glasskube/operator) is dedicated to making the deployment process of your favourite Open Source Tools like GitLab, HashiCorp Vault, Keycloak, and Gitea as beginner and user- friendly as possible, allowing you to effortlessly self-host those Tools in your Kubernetes environment. You can find our repository on Github [https://github.com/glasskube/op erator](https://github.com/glasskube/operator). If you like what we are doing, find it interesting or helpful, we would be very grateful, if you could support our journey by leaving a star. If you do not like what we are doing, we would also appreciate it if you could let us know why or what we can do better :) Our current Roadmap is: * **User-Friendly UI:** A visually intuitive interface to enhance your experience. (We know that our current Helm Chart is still not very beginner friendly). * **Powerful CLI:** Command-line capabilities for easy bootstrapping without any other dependencies like Helm. * **Expanded Toolset:** Integration of additional tools to broaden your self-hosting capabilities. We value your feedback and want to hear from you! Let us know your thoughts, identify any missing tools or features, and help us refine Glasskube to make self-hosting even more straightforward for everyone. Also feel to join the discussion on our [Discord](https://discord.gg/SxH6KUCGH7). โ€‹ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Old-Assumption4984 ยท 2023-12-13 18:23 How does this compare to Google kompose or does it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onedr0p ยท 2023-12-14 07:47 This is just like Helm except when a value isn't exposed I need to open an issue to support it instead of using a kustomize patch to do it myself? I'll keep an eye on the project but it seems like you're trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist, and just introduces another tool that does the same thing as other ones without any clear benefits? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pmigat ยท 2023-12-14 07:56 Hi u/onedr0p, Thanks for the feedback, I'm also on of the Co-Founders of Glasskube. We try to replace / built on top of helm, but with component (the operator) that runs inside the cluster and is able to interact with the Kubernetes API to perform tasks like Backups and Major version upgrades. The reason we are building Glasskube is that we found shortcomings that helm isn't able to solve. We summarized our opinions on helm here: https://glasskube.eu/en/r/knowledge/5-helm-shortcomings/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onedr0p ยท 2023-12-14 08:37 1. This isn't an issue for me because I'm using Flux as my CD tool and it handles Helm CRD updates just fine. 2. Fair but I don't see that being an issue if you know what you're doing and expectations are met. 3. I don't think creating a app in glasscube is any easier than creating a Helm chart, especially since you're all using a programming language not really used in the ecosystem instead of something more common like Go. 4. Helm actually supports schema validation of values.yaml, does any one actually do it? Not likely but it is there and your lack of mentioning it in the article is weird. https://www.arthurkoziel.com/validate-helm-chart-values-with-json- schemas/ 5. Again this one is solved by using a GitOps tool like Flux that has a helm controller thus making it a server side operator too. Don't get me wrong I have my own reasons for not liking Helm which are actually things you failed to mention. I'm not convinced that Glasscube is really the answer to what the community needs as a package manager for Kubernetes instead of Helm. I do hope your team the best of luck but I'll probably be sticking with the devil I know for the time being. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pmigat ยท 2023-12-14 08:44 Thanks for your detailed feedback and taking time to explore new projects - We appreciate that a lot as we are still trying to find our exact positioning in this space! I would be curious what your reasons for disliking helm are and what we failed to mentioned? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onedr0p ยท 2023-12-14 08:48 This article pretty much covers it from my end https://blog.devops.dev/why-helms-design-is-flawed-a66c07c2e9a1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Real_Way_9499 ยท 2023-12-14 10:58 Interesting stuff man ๐Ÿ‘ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drodo64 ยท 2023-12-14 12:17 I think I already heard of you before but nice to see your progress^^
