Self hosted software in the cloud reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-13 14:01 I know this might seem antithetical to some, but a while back I came across a a cloud platform that provides managed installs of normally self hosted software. The would manage the updates etc, but the rest was up to you. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called though! Does this sound familiar to anyone? Can anyone help me fine this service again? Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-13 14:43 I faintly remember someone making a post about that here, advertising it. It got removed because a lot of things were off about it, borderline shady. But i dont remember the exact name and searching removed/deleted posts is tricky. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-13 16:23 Its getting worse and worde with the AI add bots on Reddit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-13 16:24 Alpine! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-13 16:24 My trigger word to make my happy ❤️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-13 16:25 Shit that wasnt my intention. Hmmm Not Alpine! Flatlands! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shbatm · 2023-12-13 18:05 Are you thinking of [Turnkey Linux](https://www.turnkeylinux.org/)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pwnamte · 2023-12-13 18:20 yunohost maybe? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-13 18:28 So you don't want to see me happy 🥺? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-13 18:34 Cant you tell, i dont want to see **anyone** happy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Patient-Tech · 2023-12-13 18:45 It’s an idea, but I don’t see the advantage. We self host because we can maximize our hard drive space or keep things local to minimize bandwidth usage. I’d love to have a hot rod machine in the cloud that has unlimited bandwidth for a few bucks a month, but so does everyone else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech2but1 · 2023-12-13 19:18 > We self host because we can maximize our hard drive space or keep things local to minimize bandwidth usage. Well, only because a cloud hosted option isn't usually economically viable. I'd happily shift my servers to the cloud if I could. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- toporow17 · 2023-12-13 19:44 https://awweso.me/self-hosting-solutions/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-13 22:11 Lol. I'm sure this post is going to be the turning point for their business. Is it so extraordinary to not want to have to have a piece of hardware running in their appartment, or that a lurker might occasionally make a post? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-13 22:13 The one im looking for was more SaaS. I.e. they offered specific pieces of software, not just the base system. Thanks though 🙂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-13 22:16 Not extraordinary, just highly unlikely to have such a coincidence. But it does happen :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-13 22:17 Not it, but interesting list. Reading these lists always makes me feel like a kid in a candy store "ooo, I'll have that... and that... and that too" 😄 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-13 22:20 I don't know if thats the one I saw, but it looks like what I am after! Thanks heaps! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-13 22:32 Dang. This seems to just be an OS rather than a biz that sorts everything out for me 😔 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chilie · 2023-12-14 01:21 [PikaPods](https://www.pikapods.com)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- erryday · 2023-12-14 03:14 I’m doing that on startup scale for small businesses at formable.app ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blind_guardian23 · 2023-12-14 08:00 did some research some time ago: app-stores: \- cloudron: https://www.cloudron.io/store/index.html \- yunohost: https://yunohost.org/en/apps \- pikapods (based on docker) app-installer: \- bitnami (aquired by vmware) \- turnkey (own scripts) \- CapRover (based on docker, nginx) but i prefer self-hosting the ansible-way (create vserver on proxmox or cloud like hetzner) and installing apps myself. why? usually i have things i want to change and app-installer dont always do it a clean way and i want to choose my own hosting. for quick testing its fine.
