Nextcloud for photos reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mythenmetz1 · 2023-12-13 07:10 I currently don't use a cloud backup for my photos on my phone. I backup them sometimes on my computer. That's of course not ideal. I don't want to use Google Photos since it's a nightmare to download picture from them if I do not want to use it anymore in the future. I looked into Nextcloud but there seems to be not easy way to have a two-way-sync of pictures. I want to upload all my videos and pictures to the cloud and when I delete a file on my phone, the web interface or computer the change should be reflected on all other devices and the web. In short: I want kind of something like Apple Photos for Android. Google Photos locks you in, Onedrive/Dropbox/Amazon have huge privacy issues. Is there a simple way to do this with Nextcloud (running Hetzner [**Storage Boxes**](https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box)**)?** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ridelldie1824 · 2023-12-13 07:18 You definitely want [immich](https://github.com/immich-app/immich) - just note it’s still under active development, but I’ve heard nothing but good things so far. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Freeman371 · 2023-12-13 08:02 Newtcloud android app works but it looks like a bit like and abandonware. You can also use any webdav app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-13 08:36 I use nextcloud to sync and delete my photos (and other documents) from mobile devices and then, on the homeserver, have Photoprism on to top of that sync folder as a GUI to extract metadata from the photos, catalog them with AI, share albums. For me the better approach than a dedicated photo sync server, regardless if Photoprism or Immich. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mythenmetz1 · 2023-12-13 09:02 That would be fairly easy to set up. But then you have to use the Nextcloud app on you mobile to delete and sort photos. There is no way to do this in the gallery, right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lespasapp · 2023-12-13 09:25 Try [Les Pas](https://github.com/scubajeff/lespas#readme). Background sync, options to ignore certain directories, sync deletion to server, and automatically delete photos after certain period of time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-13 10:01 Well, yes and no. First of all, the nextcloud app is just a WebDAV sync app. You can in fact use the nectcloud app to sync with other (non nextcloud) servers that have WebDAV and you can use other WebDAV apps to sync to Nextcloud. For example photosync https://www.photosync-app.com/de/index You can also sync with Photoprism directly via WebDAV, so in theory you don't need Nextcloud, don't know about Immich I think it uses a proprietary sync protocol. The reason I have the combination of NC and photosync is because NC is my central storage solution for all syncing, for several years already. I didn't want another solution for photos only but have it as a part of an existing setup. Personally I have set-up the nextcloud app to upload all images by Photos > Year > Month > Image Files and that's my preferred "on disk" structure which I don't touch again, except for deleting garbage photos. The actual sorting and grouping, curating into albums etc is done via metadata in Photoprism. Photoprism does not have a native android or iOS app but instead a "Progressive Web App": meaning you can install the app on your phone but it's a web app. Its very fast and works very well, I rarely need a different app to access my photos. But I can: i.e. like the nextcloud app as you mentioned or I additionally use this Gallery App https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nkming.nc_photos.pai d Which is basically a replacement of your local gallery with nextcloud as a backend. I only use it because there is one major downside to this setup - Photoprism doesn't know when new photos were uploaded via Nextcloud so you need to manually run an index update or schedule a regular update job via systemd or cron. If you uploaded via WebDAV directly to Photoprism, it would automatically update the index. So if your Nextcloud sync just ran, the photos might not immediately show up in Photoprism. To remedy this, I have direct access to the photos via the app I meantioned. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eysenor · 2023-12-13 13:16 For just archiving photos nextcloud with the mobile app is good. For actually having a very functional cloud gallery use Immich. It is in development but works so well. I have both working at the same time so I have 2 copies of the same photos but I'm sure that one is working. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hakker9 · 2023-12-13 13:47 https://memories.gallery/ might be something for you. I don't know if it works like you desire it to be though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- readit-on-reddit · 2023-12-13 14:12 Nextcloud has the memories app which, last time I checked, had the same features as Immich and more (it has EXIF metadata editing for example). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tech2but1 · 2023-12-13 20:35 That doesn't do 2 way sync though, it's a backup solution? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- helmut72 · 2023-12-14 06:58 In my last tests months ago, everything around Nextcloud (including Memories app) felt to slow for my collection (200GB) from last 15 years. Also Immich is to deep into development. Since I using a Synology NAS for some backups, I've tried Synology Photos and it's the best solution for me, regarding performance, reliable sync on iOS (it notifies me when it stops) and features (HEIC, HEIF, 360° photos and videos, management with timeline and folders). I don't use albums manually, because it's proprietary like others. Only have some dynamically created albums with Exif tags. For me my folders are my albums. Then I'm able to move to another product easily if there is some better solution for me. Don't want to be jailed to anything, even if something is open source. Same for my music collection.
