Hotspot internet reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisanthropicCumLord · 2023-12-13 03:22 I run a small non profit organization. For me to get cable internet (No fiber in area) ran to the building will cost us money. Or I can do a hotspot for a 1/5th the price a month, and we do get cell service. Well I need a few things once we have internet. I need to get a notification when the power goes out. My plan is to have a small computer with something running that when it loses internet, I get a notification. Then leave the battery out of the hotspot and just use wall power. From my understanding there’s no way to port forward on hotspot. Or at least this one. Any suggestions on a good, free way of doing that? Also I’d like to run the web server from the building. Any interesting ideas for a free way to route DNS and “forward” 80 and 443 without ACTUALLY forwarding those ports? Right now we do get the free infrastructure grant from Microsoft, but it’s always good to have a back up. Plus I could be backing up the stuff in our SharePoint to an on prem server. I do have my own ideas and plans but I’m curious what this community will have for ideas. The only cost with Cloudflared is domain name registration. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisanthropicCumLord · 2023-12-13 03:57 Hmm I already use CF for all my domains. I buy them somewhere else and just use CF nameservers. I didn’t even know they had a DDNS service. Found this well done tutorial. https://youtu.be/5MFVGa-uiJ0?si=gloRrxDU9BeMyXwY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StockKnife · 2023-12-13 04:35 Yeah they've got heaps of free options! If you find that you still can't access opened ports then it would be due to the mobile internet provider using CGNAT and in this case you'd still need cloudflare tunnels to open local ports to the internet, that's what i ran into anyway :) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvIdFs3M5ic](https://www.yo utube.com/watch?v=ZvIdFs3M5ic) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Square_Lawfulness_33 · 2023-12-14 01:02 Get a ups and setup nut to monitor the ups from there if you’re so inclined you can write a simple python or bash script that checks the status and emails you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisanthropicCumLord · 2023-12-14 05:18 I don’t really wanna buy a UPS though. I just want to go with what I have. A repeater, a 4g router, and a Lenovo mini desktop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisanthropicCumLord · 2023-12-14 05:22 Thank you! The reason I’m being tight with spending is all the money is raised through donations and community events. And that’s been rough. None of us get paid, and the money goes to buying food for the hungry, unhoused, and facilitating inclusive community events. I feel like people on sysadmin didn’t understand the assignment lol I’m tech savvy af, so it’s not a typical situation. My initial thought was to go with a DDNS service, free. Then try and use something like Tailscale to fake port forward and run a tiny web page that is then on a free service that monitors when the site goes down. Then the notification is have email to an email, forward that to a google voice number. And then forward that out to my board members so one of us can go check the power is still on and the freezers are working. But cloudflared sounds like that removes the need for the Tailscale part. Which is friggin PERFECT. I get my gear next week so I’ll probably be setting up then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisanthropicCumLord · 2023-12-14 05:25 I think I biffed that thought process? Might not need the Tailscale too. I’m tired. But yeah. What I said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StockKnife · 2023-12-14 05:40 I think you're on the right track and I'm glad I could help out, sounds like an awesome cause and you're putting in some awesome work! CloudFlare tunnels and Tailscale do the same job so you're right that Tailscale wouldn't be needed anymore! :) If you have any further questions feel free to dm. I might know the answer, i might not haha ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisanthropicCumLord · 2023-12-15 05:13 Thanks! I will remember to bother you if I can’t figure something out or Google it.
