Need advice for an AIO self-hosting solution reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- naimo77 · 2023-12-12 22:42 Hi everyone! I've been tinkering for about 2 years with an homeserver running ubuntu server + docker + nginx. Now I would like to switch to something simpler that runs on a raspberry Pi 4 cause I feel my current setup is a bit too much "needy" in terms of mainteinance and consumption. I need to run just a few things now: - Nextcloud - Vaultwarden - Homeassistant I took a look on umbrel os and casa os, which seem to meet my criteria, but I would appreciate any suggestion by you guys. Bonus points if they are pretty strong in terms of security. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 22:46 /r/CosmosServer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 654354365476435 · 2023-12-12 23:25 I'm using unraid - its very handsoff after initial configuration - he can even auto update dockers if you want to (I do), not sure how it runs in RP4 tho. Alternative are other nas softwares but they are all similar, its worth looking into rancher also as all you need is docker. Security are very similar between them - its all linux so its mostly depends on how they keep up with security fixes, most security you can gain is from your configuration - if you want most secure setup then just dosn't expose them to internet at all, if you need to then next best thing is VPN, is you don't want VPN (I don't) then arpa tunnel from cloudflare is worth looking for - I expose vaultwarden, homeassistant and immich this way for multiple users. Never just port forward directly to services - reverse proxy like nginx proxy manager is minimum and dead simple to configure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hdddanbrown · 2023-12-13 00:06 Sorry but wtf kind of advice is that, unraid on a raspi?? and wtf are "dockers", they are docker containers. But ignoring that you seriously recommend unraid to someone who is looking fot a hands off thing like casa? tsss ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-12-13 00:24 What would you describe as needy in terms of management? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Accomplished-Lack721 · 2023-12-13 01:22 I don't think you'll find those any less "needy." They're just friendly front-ends to the same sort of software you're already using, applying the same concepts. In some cases they do one-click deployments well ... within reason, and maybe not set up how would be useful to you. But when you have something you have a need or want to tweak, they're likely less flexible than the systems you're already using. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Smeeks1126 · 2023-12-13 02:58 I'd honestly say just run truenas scale on an old office thin client or something like that. It uses docker, and you're already familiar with that. And all the community apps are so easy to spin up. I believe they have one for all 3 of those services. If an RPi is what it's gotta be on. You would propbably be better off just using a minimal linux install with docker, or proxmox and spin up an LXC for each one. This guy has made a page of helper scripts for proxmox that will get you doing basically everything you need really quick. There is also the Turnkey Linux site you can use to get almost any service you can think of up and running in your favorite flavor of container or VM. https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- staticshadow40 · 2023-12-13 04:18 I honestly came here to suggest Unraid but I like that dude, didn't read that he would be running this on a Pi4 - in which case you're absolutely correct. I think **CasaOS**/Umbrel/CosmosServer all would suit OP's needs perfectly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 654354365476435 · 2023-12-13 07:58 I did write that I don't know if it will run well on rb4, becouse I have no expirience with it in that settings. About dockers vs containers - you are correct but for us not admins its just some apps we install, all other things are semantics, thank you for your correction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trisanachandler · 2023-12-13 13:14 If your stack is stable, then I wouldn't expect the issues to be on the OS side, but on the container side. If you're looking for it all to just work, there's no guarantee. In some ways I might recommend dietpi, I love it, it can run docker, and has semi-customized versions of a lot of software. It's based on debian, and has a decent backup feature as well so you can ensure data is intact. I don't run it right now, but have considered moving back to it. I'm currently using a mini-pc for my container host running ubuntu, and have two prebuilt NAS for data+backups. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san · 2023-12-13 16:39 Cosmos server makes this easy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cavilesphoto · 2023-12-13 17:21 With a little learning curve, Raspbian os lite w/o GUI, docker and the rest is up to you: security: on your own requirements, vpn, proxy server, ad blocker.... Apps:from home assistant to vault warden... Starting there I bet you money you won't stop there, this is easy after a little learning and so powerful you will always have things to play with... And confide in,as you control'em My first move was towards a 'casa os' alike but it didn't exist. Now I don't regret my path, I've learned a lot and made my own system with my own requirements. And tons of people, video channels and subreddits to search for help and info.worth every single minute of work ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonsailinse · 2023-12-13 19:07 You should not suggest things you don’t understand. Even thinking about adding so much overhead to a system like a pi is showing you don’t. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 654354365476435 · 2023-12-13 19:15 Its not optimal but it would work fine ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonsailinse · 2023-12-13 23:45 It is absolutely unnecessary and a waste of resources. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- azukaar · 2023-12-14 09:26 Hello! I am the dev of Cosmos ([https://github.com/azukaar/Cosmos- Server/](https://github.com/azukaar/Cosmos-Server/)) which is exactly what you describe: take CasaOS and adds everything you need for maintenance (manage update, monitoring, etc... backups are coming) and a strong security focus (proxy shield, VPN, geoblocking, ...) Feel free to take a look!
