Best way to turn an old Android tablet into an always-on dashboard? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notdoreen · 2023-12-12 22:39 I mounted the thing on a picture frame on the wall and ran a cable behind the wall so it's plugged in always. Initially I set it up as a digital picture frame with a slideshow of pictures of the family. Now I want to switch things up and have a dashboard instead that shows a few things like a calendar, weather, upcoming appointments/tasks, etc. I was googling and came accross raspberry pis with homeassistant and smart mirror but was wondering if there was an easier way without having to buy additional devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 22:48 Not exactly selfhosting related... Try subs like /r/HomeAssistant and similar, tablets as dashboards come up there all the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sy029 · 2023-12-12 22:55 If you could get widgets that would do that stuff, you could probably just do with with the standard androidOS, as long as you could set it to always on and never lock. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ParaDescartar123 · 2023-12-13 00:42 I accomplish this with an app called KIOSK IN IOS and Android. Green icon with bar chart under the word KIOSK. However, kiosk simply handle two very important things. 1. Launches and runs a particular url full screen 2. Prevents tablet from going to sleep This means you have to have an existing url that displays what you need the tablet to display. Not sure this gets you a solution but it does get you the app that can display your solution. I run Hubitat dashboard which provides a url my tablet can display.
