start a secure webserver (miniPC won't enable hyper-V) reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 17:24 trying to get the right software and maybe use the miniPC as a dedicated server unless i can still use it with Windows OS, has Windows11 but even after reinstalling Windows11, this TrigKey G5 miniPC won't enable hyper-V and even sometimes doesn't do Windows Update i've heard a bit about nginx proxy, pfsense, proxmox, docker, VM, cloudlfare, nmap, port forward and i tried installing Tomato on my router (ASUS tuf ax3000 v2, but doesn't have Tomato GUI) i got a static IP now and a domain i put the nameserver to cloudflare and also put the ipv4 list manually one by one in my router Firewall hopefully that's done correctly. just the domain stuff a bit. no other software yet. i could maybe use Webflow to get some website design maybe find some better file protocols and storage, sync, symlinks, etc some backups also it may be a lot smoother to get a larger computer and use a VM, or fix this buggy stuff with hyper-v and windows update or get a new miniPC but this was the one...i specifically got 2.5gbps ethernet and the router for this so maybe i could make a new VLAN or VM or just use Linux as the base, or put Linux VM inside Windows...? either on this miniPC, and whether i get a higher powered computer or not also [https://blog.prutser.net/2021/01/20/how-to-securely-self-host-a- website-or-web-app/](https://blog.prutser.net/2021/01/20/how-to- securely-self-host-a-website-or-web-app/) i got syncback software, there's also freefilesync some ftp and syncthing also could make sure RDP is setup well or VNC, or other remote console and webUI i don't like USB storage as much because it lags to wake up the device could get a full ATX system with hotswap drives if not a USB dock...SATA should be a lot faster or just make sure it's on the internal SSD, and run image/mirror backups or incremental/differential beside that, just hoping to get a webpage loaded ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 17:49 This post is all over the place, sorry i cant make much sense of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jerwong · 2023-12-12 18:13 I went down a similar path. I got a tiny pc and tried to install ESXi. Spent about 45 minutes trying to get drivers to work. Eventually gave up and just installed Proxmox instead. Took less than 15 minutes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 18:59 windows PC or maybe linux to get a webserver set up... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 19:00 >Proxmox on Windows or Linux still deciding whether to get a full PC also ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 19:02 Aha, then just google and follow a basic guide? "how to install webserver" etc? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 19:04 yep ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 19:05 https://blog.prutser.net/2021/01/20/how-to-securely-self-host-a- website-or-web-app/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jerwong · 2023-12-12 19:11 Proxmox is the operating system. Technically it's Debian Linux but it's intended to be the base OS i.e. you install the ISO directly instead of installing the base OS and then installing the software. Once you set it up, you can get into the console via web browser on the local network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 19:20 And? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 19:28 a secure webserver any other tips is my setup good just to do this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 19:30 read the title ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 19:34 yeah i'm having trouble getting hyper-v enabled in Windows so do you think i should just install Proxmox and can that do FTP and most stuff too? and then if i need another PC i could add a desktop or laptop and whether it's gonna need much processing power. like i said, a full desktop i could run it virtually... can that do Proxmox? most basic webserver and such doesn't need more processing power though. media or anything else maybe. so i could just run the miniPC headless ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 19:35 hyper-v isn't working i have to decide whether to remove Windows and get Linux or other hardware ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Appelsap_de · 2023-12-12 20:02 The fuck is this post about. It's not even a comprehensive story, let alone sentence. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-12-12 20:04 This is the Reddit equivalent of somebody doing a little bit too much amphetamine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AmIARobot · 2023-12-12 20:08 Hyper-V and any virtualization needs to be enabled in BIOS before it can be used in the OS. Check the manual for exactly what setting, as they vary from manufacturer and CPU. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 20:13 i went through all the BIOS options and didn't find it and yes i've searched online ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jerwong · 2023-12-12 20:13 Proxmox is the equivalent of using Hyper-V except it works about 100x better. Once proxmox is installed, you can launch virtual machines/lxc containers and install whatever you need i.e. ftp server, web server, media server, etc. You can even install Windows into a proxmox vm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 20:14 to get hyper-v setup else get another computer and a couple extraneous points about filesystem also ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 20:15 or any other tips about securing it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Appelsap_de · 2023-12-12 20:30 Buddy, take a moment and format your questions. Even if English isn't your native tongue, try and translate into proper questions. If hyper-v isn't installing, check your windows version. Else reinstall windows. You could also install docker. It's somewhat simpler to get a webserver running. Google "how to setup a webserver on docker desktop" It seems you're not grasping the basics, so I would advise you to start learning the difference and basics between hardware and software, Windows and Linux, vm's and containers. Grasping at straws here, but it sounds like you shouldn't make this webserver publicly available as a simple google search on securing webservers didn't come to mind. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-12 20:32 But not install Proxmox in a VM inside Windows? But Windows in Proxmox. Still not sure if I should just get a full PC Ok for now I can run the miniPC headless and just tinker with it Hopefully check if it's secure And save my Windows license key, etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dargx001 · 2023-12-12 21:09 Just to ask the obvious question here, what version of Windows 11 does the mini PC have installed? Depending on your answer, that may be the deciding factor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jerwong · 2023-12-12 21:53 Pick Hyper-V or pick Proxmox. It's one or the other. I chose Proxmox so that I wouldn't have to deal with the same issues you're dealing with now. You can use the tiny pc to start off with. I went with that over a full size pc because it takes up very little space, consumes very little power, and doesn't generate much noise. It's plenty powerful for my needs but for you it will depend on how much stuff you're installing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-13 01:53 Windows Pro ---------------------------------------------------------------------- exitdoorleft · 2023-12-13 01:56 Yes, as mentioned in the post, I reinstalled Windows. Yes, as mentioned in the post I found an article instructions, and installed Docker. Hoping before the server is public that it's set well Thanks. It might take a bit more tinkering.
