Looking for help on building my first Home Media Server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamturna · 2023-12-12 15:57 Hi everyone, short time lurker, first time poster here. I have been planning on setting up my own Home Media Server, mainly for having a movie/shows collection for when I want to watch a movie. Now, I also want to try and use this for gaming (Emulation). So I plan on using a PC as a server. So what I want to do is using a PC with Sonarr, Radarr and Lidarr. Have this handle my movies, shows and music. The movies and shows are on Plex or Infuse which is accessible on my Apple TV connected to my TV. Downloads from Lidarr will be going on Nextcloud, which will also be used for my other devices as "Cloud Storage". Now with this running, I also want to install Ryujinx on the PC for when I just want to hop on the couch and play some Switch, or any other emulator for that part. Obviously, over time I will be adding more usecases for this, like adblocking on my network for example or adding other emulators. My question is, is this realistic? I have made the setup in a map in the TLDR. TLDR: Is this setup realistic/possible? Do you have any tips or improvements? https://preview.redd.it/sfqw1xf4zv5c1.png?width=2740&format=png&auto=w ebp&s=3c7116ac0e71230d45a856a6cdaa615c7f612b23 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 16:02 Yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cylian91460 · 2023-12-12 16:37 Why Plex and not jellyfin ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamturna · 2023-12-12 17:02 Honestly, I don't know. Any advantages of using Jellyfin over Plex? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cylian91460 · 2023-12-12 17:02 It's open source and corporate free ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anejey · 2023-12-12 17:13 Jellyfin allows hardware transcoding for free. Plex needs a subscription. Jellyfin also tends to work better when offline. Plex usually needs the cloud to authenticate. But honestly, use whichever you want. Both are great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anejey · 2023-12-12 17:21 The setup is fine, it'll work. If you are up for the challenge, setting up Proxmox and virtualizing everything would be a pretty good choice. It'd allow you to run much more than media stuff if you wanted, and also it'd make reverting mistakes much easier since you could make proper backups. There's an OS that's great for retro gaming/emulation -> Batocera. I run it virtualized on my server and it works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Midnight_Rising · 2023-12-12 18:17 One of the benefits of using Jellyfin over Plex is that you handle your own authentication. One of the benefits of using Plex is that you don't have to handle your own authentication. Really, Plex has a fantastic ecosystem of apps with a pretty great UX, but they put some of those features behind a paywall. They've also been making some "dodgy" business decisions to try and get away from the stigma of a piracy app. Jellyfin is entirely open source, which we love here, but that does come with quite a few weaknesses revolving around direction and cohesiveness. The further you go into selfhosting the more you'll appreciate Jellyfin for what it is, but the more your users will appreciate Plex for what it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamturna · 2023-12-12 18:37 Yeah I have also thought about Prowlarr and Overseerr. I haven't heard about Proxmox, and Batocera also looks interesting. I'll look into it, thanks ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- no-fapping-way · 2023-12-12 20:23 Also JellyFin doesn’t share your viewing habits with friends ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ikram25 · 2023-12-12 20:41 Look for a cheaper server on eBay later on as an improvement. But if you have the storage and cpu/ram power for sure do something like Proxmox and set up each thing as a VM, any hypervisor will do doesn’t have to be Proxmox. Then it’ll allow easier scaling going forward if you ever get a new device or more services to run ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reklis · 2023-12-13 01:10 This kind of sounds like you are mixing your server with your workstation. It will probably make your life nicer if they are two different machines. One that's a server that is on 24/7 and another that you can turn on and off to play games and is plugged into your tv. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamturna · 2023-12-13 10:07 any recommendation for cpu/ram? obviously more power will be better but what would you recommend? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ikram25 · 2023-12-13 17:40 The most important this is whatever you are comfortable with and can afford. Generally with hypervisors you want more cores from your cpu. So try at least 4core/8thread minimum, Xeon. Hard to go wrong there, your motherboard is what’ll show you what you can upgrade to in the future. Ram doesn’t matter too much just make sure whether it is DDR2, DDR3, or DDR4. I personally found someone on Facebook with compatible ram and bought from them. Servers don’t care about speed and hz of ram like gaming computers do ---------------------------------------------------------------------- howlingwolftshirt · 2023-12-13 20:21 I’d recommend you run everything inside docker. It allows you to keep all the media server dependencies separate from your workstation, and update them only when you intend to. It also means that if you ever change workstations that redeploying the media server is a five minute job (aside from copying content). If you need more info, shout. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Square_Lawfulness_33 · 2023-12-14 01:24 I have a similar setup on a mini 4x4 AMD APU. Docker, yuzu.
