TrueNAS Scale to Proxmox Migration reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LazyTech8315 · 2023-12-12 15:26 Hello! I have decided that instead of using TrueNAS for virtualization (apps and VMs), I would like to reverse this and install Proxmox, then NAS software from inside a VM, or something like that. This last part hasn't been decided yet, but I have a couple issues & questions. *Please let me know if this would be better off posted in another sub.* First, I have several Linux and a couple Windows VMs on TrueNAS Scale. Some are using UEFI, and some UEFI\_CSM. With the latter, I found it was quite easy to move the Linux VMs. (I converted the raw dataset to a QCOW2 file and I'm now serving it over NFS to Proxmox). With UEFI, I see that Proxmox uses a separate EFI disk where TrueNAS Scale does not. What are the steps to migrate this? Next, my Windows 10 guest seemed to migrate well, except it won't boot in Proxmox. I tried Qemu64 and a few other options until I settled on "Host." Right now (I now, it's bad... it's temporary!!) I have Proxmox installed as a VM inside TrueNAS Scale, so the passthrough "host" CPU should be the same as the host config directly on TrueNAS. Windows says there was a problem booting and tries startup repair over and over. Is there something you know of that's usually the cause or do you need specific details here? Lastly, I have a few apps (K8S) on TrueNAS: * Nextcloud / collabora * Resilio sync * PaperlessNGX * Grocy * Immich * Jellyfin * TVHeadend * Frigate I have a TON of data in Paperless and Immich for multiple users. I want to use LXC as much as possible. With that in mind, I decided to work on Jelyfin first. I created the LXC and copied the data to is, but it seems to not recognize it and just started as if it was a clean install. I created a user, then copied data in. It dawned on my that if I shut down the container, I have no access to the filesystem. so I SSHd in to it and killed the process... which started again. After toying around with this more, I came to the conclusion that I don't know enough to move forward with the migration yet. Some of the apps above will be easier than others, I'm sure. Some I can re-create without issue. Others would be a nightmare to start from ground zero again. I know this isn't a support sub for all of these apps, but I think I need to start out with some base knowledge on Proxmox then dig in to the specific app requirements. Like, how do I shut down the app inside the container, but leave the container running so I can copy files into it? *I'm sure I'll have more questions. Feel free to anticipate my future questions and give me some info. As a FYI of how to approach me, I've used Linux for decades (it's my primary desktop/laptop OS) and I deployed VMWare with a SAN for a customer around 2009 (as an authorized reseller). I've deployed XCP-ng multiple times and currently maintain networks for customers remotely. I have some good knowledge, but I'm sure there's holes in it, too - I can't possibly know everything!* Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 15:34 /r/Proxmox? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LazyTech8315 · 2023-12-12 15:48 I almost posted there, but this seems to be related more to a list of self-hosted apps.
