Web UI to share files stored in S3 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- youRFate · 2023-12-12 12:12 I have a bunch of files in S3 that are fairly big (around 10gb each, many of them). I sometimes want friends to have access to them, so what I did is mount the s3 bucket in s3fs on a server and have a simple file lister running in a webserver (this one: https://www.directorylister.com/). However, the chain of client -> server -> s3fs -> s3 is sometimes unreliable. Is there some kind of web frontend for s3 that I can host where users can download files and get them server directly from s3, without me having to share s3 api keys with my friends? The files are on wasabi s3, so api fees don't apply, and its super low traffic, so I should be fine with their fair use. The server I use is a hetzner vps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- youRFate · 2023-12-12 12:34 To be honest, a tool that I point to a folder in my s3 bucket that then creates a list of direct links for them with a configurateable lifetime would probably also work, I could give that file to a friend and have them download it with some bulk downloader software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-12 12:44 SFTPGo to connect to S3 and then any standard SFTP client to connect to SFTPGo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-12 22:24 Rclone Web UI ---------------------------------------------------------------------- youRFate · 2023-12-12 22:51 I have used nextcloud before, but it doesn't deep-link to the s3 files, it downloads them to the server to share. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-12 23:00 I think unless you run the GUI on the same machine as the S3 Buckets, copying the file to the GUI server and then serving them is what all of them do. At the end you can just mount S3 via fuse and use whatever GUI you fancy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-12 23:18 https://blog.min.io/filesystem-on-object-store-is-a-bad-idea/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- murdaBot · 2023-12-13 07:22 That's not really relevant for OP's use case. Yes, it is a bad idea, but OP isn't using it as a filesystem, so the limitations of object stores don't apply. NextCloud could very easily just serve the S3 link to the end user for downloading, rather than downloading the S3 file to the local filesystem, and the serving that. But instead it performs an intermediate download of the file, which is kinda boneheaded. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-13 07:40 It always great to see that so many people think they know better. Well, if he has problems with the direct download via s3fs, an intermediate chaching mechanism might be solution to his problem. In any case, there are different ways to access s3 buckets from nextcloud, as external storage or as primary storage.
