Jellyfin - slow streaming issue reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 09:14 I have a home media server running at my home. I've downloaded some movies which I would like to watch and setup Jellyfin and Samba too. The film plays instantly and smoothly if I access it through samba and open on a video player for my non-tech family member, they would like to watch it over Jellyfin as it's much more intuitive to them. The streaming via Jellyfin is slow on local network and also over the internet, whereas samba can play it flawlessly. What can I do to make it work? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schaka · 2023-12-12 09:43 Could it be getting transcoded? If that isn't set up correctly, it might buffer. Network should be no different between those 2 options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 10:24 I read about this but I’ve not turned anything specially for this. I also couldn’t find much about it. Is there a way to check this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schaka · 2023-12-12 10:25 Turn on debug info in whatever player you're using. In the browser there's an option for more info ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Over-Advice6046 · 2023-12-12 10:28 In the profile -> Client -> Video Player type. You would find web player, integrated Player, and External player. What did you choose? If you choose web player then you may switch it to integrated player or External Player. This would prevent transcode if your device support the file playback. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 10:28 Let me check. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 10:32 I’ve no such option in my Jellyfin under clients. My version is 10.8.11 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Over-Advice6046 · 2023-12-12 10:36 What devices you used to watch with jellyfin? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Over-Advice6046 · 2023-12-12 10:36 What devices you used to watch with jellyfin? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 10:37 I’m watching on Firefox on MacBook ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Over-Advice6046 · 2023-12-12 10:40 Well, i'm not using the version same as you. But in my jellyfin 10.8.13, the options are there ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 10:40 Could you share a screenshot of the page please? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Over-Advice6046 · 2023-12-12 10:41 Can i dm you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 10:41 Yes please ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Selest1 · 2023-12-12 11:03 Try with the Jellyfin desktop app rather than with Firefox ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stewge · 2023-12-12 12:17 Is your media encoded in HEVC? Until recently (and with a config setting) Firefox hasn't supported native HEVC playback due to licensing issues. So Jellyfin would tranacode on CPU if you haven't configured anything. You'll want to check your hardware is capable enough to keep up with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- imsinghaniya · 2023-12-12 12:45 I didn’t know they had one. Will try that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eehbkl · 2023-12-12 12:59 So firefox can natively play HEVC with a config change now? I tried googling but couldn't find anything, could you please tell me how? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stewge · 2023-12-12 20:02 I just checked again and it's currently windows only. It basically offloads to the Windows media backend to technically get around the HEVC licensing requirement. Details are here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1853448 In the meantime, I'd suggest looking into a dedicated client since you're on OSX. Jellyfin Media Player has a Mac client. I don't have any Mac clients, so can't speak to how good it is on that platform. But the Windows and Nix clients are great.
