Seeking Help with WireGuard/NordLynx on Synology NAS for NordVPN
MeshNet & Custom DNS via AdGuard Home

Hi everyone,

I'm configuring my **Synology DS220+** (*DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 1*)
for a specific setup involving  [NordVPN's
Meshnet](https://meshnet.nordvpn.com/getting-started/meshnet-
explained), WireGuard/NordLynx, and AdGuard Home. My goal is to use
AdGuard Home running on my NAS as the custom DNS server for my other
devices connected to NordVPN's MeshNet. I believe the key lies in
using WireGuard/NordLynx (not OpenVPN) to integrate my NAS into the
MeshNet. This setup requires a Docker container for NordVPN, and
here's where I need your expertise.

**Objectives:**

* **Integrate NAS with NordVPN MeshNet:**
   * Install and configure WireGuard/NordLynx on the NAS to integrate
with NordVPN's MeshNet, allowing my NAS to be part of the MeshNet
network.
* **Selective Traffic Routing:**
   * Route specific Docker container traffic through the NordVPN
(NordLynx) container, while keeping other NAS traffic separate.
* **AdGuard Home as Custom DNS:**
   * Use AdGuard Home (running in Docker on the NAS) as the DHCP
server and custom DNS for my entire network. This is crucial because
my router doesn't allow setting a custom DNS, and I want my MeshNet-
connected devices to use AdGuard Home for DNS queries.

**Current Setup Overview:**

* **AdGuard Home in Docker on Synology DS220+:** Successfully
deployed, handling DNS management and network-wide ad-blocking.
* **AdGuard Home as DHCP Server:** Configured due to my router's
limitations on setting local DNS.
* **Router WAN DNS Settings:** Changed to 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9 to
ensure compatibility with AdGuard Home, as the ISP's default DNS was
inadequate.

**Questions:**

1. **How can I set up WireGuard/NordLynx in a Docker container on my
Synology NAS to integrate with NordVPN's MeshNet effectively?**
2. **What are the best practices for selectively routing traffic from
certain Docker containers through the NordVPN Docker container?**
3. **Are there specific configurations or considerations for ensuring
AdGuard Home functions optimally as a DHCP server and DNS provider in
this setup?**

I'm aiming for a configuration where any device connected to my
MeshNet can utilize the DNS services of AdGuard Home on my NAS. The
idea is to have all DNS queries filtered through AdGuard Home for ad-
blocking and enhanced privacy.

Any insights, guidance, or experiences you can share would be
invaluable in helping me achieve this setup.

Just an fyi, but the 220+ does not have the WireGuard kernel module
natively installed. I believe it can be added, but I haven’t attempted
it on mine.
