How to make VPN without being network admin? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 03:33 I am trying to build a VPN network on my Raspberry Pi so I can access the services that can only be accessed when on school wifi while I am off campus during break. The complication is I can not do port forwarding as I am not a network admin. Surely there is a workaround? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hawaiizach · 2023-12-12 03:43 Tailscale will route your internet traffic through your pi if you set it up as an exit node. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WubbaKnight · 2023-12-12 03:48 You’re looking for [exit nodes.](https://tailscale.com/kb/1103/exit- nodes/) Alternative solution - if you’re campus has resources that can only be accessed on the university network, I’d bet that your campus IT team already has their own VPN setup for you to use in situations like this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flaming_m0e · 2023-12-12 03:50 >Rather, these platforms are more for secure communication on different LANs. That's literally what a VPN is.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thefcknhngryctrpillr · 2023-12-12 03:54 Setting up a VPN into a corporate/school network is asking for trouble...I'd suggest you reach out to the IT Dept and ask them if they provide remote access. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 03:56 Sorry I just don't know your guys lingo I'm just asking about exit nodes without admin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 03:56 Hey what they don't know won't hurt them ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 03:56 Thanks. I didn't know it was called an exit node but that is exactly what I'm looking for! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thefcknhngryctrpillr · 2023-12-12 03:58 They'll be able to see the software is installed; or they'll be able to see the hardware connected to the network; or they'll see the VON traffic passing into the network; or they'll be able to see that there's traffic originating from that VPN endpoint. Or, all of the above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 04:00 Nevermind they might be able to know I am really green in terms of networking. Is building a VPN in your dorm a no no? Are the things you listed things that IT would notice or track? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thefcknhngryctrpillr · 2023-12-12 04:04 Yep they would. For example, by connecting a Raspberry Pi, they can see it's an RPi (by the MAC address) and where it physically is (by nearest WiFi access port or the switch it's connected to). They can see the traffic flowing over the network, like connections to a VPN provider or control surface. The reason they care is because if you're adding hardware or software, you can be inadvertently installing something harmful, accidentally messing up their network (eg inadvertently by enabling DHCP or creating a broadcast storm), routing malicious traffic through their network so that you can attack something and make it look like it's from a reputable organisation. In an employment situation, some employers would dismiss an employee for installing VPN software or plugging in random hardware at work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thefcknhngryctrpillr · 2023-12-12 04:06 I say this as someone that /has/ been told off for something similar in an education environment 😅 But you won't be the first to ask how to access resources remotely. I'd definitely suggest asking the IT team. And if they say no, you could maybe ask if they'd be okay with you setting up something. But if you just don't, they'll likely find it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 04:06 Hey makes sense thanks for letting me know. I will keep this in mind. At most this is just personal use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 04:27 Would they be able to identify me personally virtually? Other than finding a VPN in my dorm physically that is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytepond · 2023-12-12 04:37 I'd say that tailscale is your best bet. I wouldn't worry too much about IT, but as others have suggested, they might already have a solution for you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wiserry · 2023-12-12 04:38 it worked thanks to you. thanks!
