What to use instead of motioneyeos to make ip cameras out of raspberry pi? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-12 03:33 Hello folks! I want to deploy frigate for security cameras. I am not ready to buy cameras yet, but i have piles of raspbery pis (really, i must have at least 20 pi zeros, and plenty of fat pis), and many camera modules. Now i like motioneye os, but it is no longer supported. It will do for experimenting, but not in the long run. Is there something you guys would recommend that runs on pi zero/zero2 or fat pis? I need something that can output to frigate, is simple to administer and with adequate security (login/password, or a token or whatever). Thanks in advance for the pointers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Drumdevil86 · 2023-12-12 06:52 Sell the Pi's, buy IP cams ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lormayna · 2023-12-12 08:00 [Motion](https://motion-project.github.io/) run smoothly on Rpi. Configuration is a bit tedious, but it's very flexible and powerful too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nicman24 · 2023-12-12 09:03 Ffserver and ffmpeg to stream rtsp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ruimikemau · 2023-12-12 13:29 Boooo 😂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Muffin_plop · 2023-12-12 16:16 I know this isn't answering your question exactly but it does look like someone is carrying the torch for Motioneye on the Pi. https://jmichault.github.io/motioneye.eo-dok/en/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-12-12 16:39 The project is transfered to a seperate project but it seems to be actively developed: https://github.com/motioneye- project/motioneye/tree/dev ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cavilesphoto · 2023-12-12 20:18 Motion eye into a docker container ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rirozizo · 2023-12-12 22:49 frigate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Answer_42 · 2023-12-13 00:45 Not really, only 4 changes this year and related to just CI, seem for 2022, hardly pass as active ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Answer_42 · 2023-12-13 00:47 Still using motioneye, it's not supported but have all what i need, why care if it's supported or not if it work for you? Most cameras you buy are not supported/updated anyway ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-13 02:53 My goal is to use frigate. But I want to use raspis as ipcams. Frigate is not it, it is what receive the video streams for the pis. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-13 02:54 Thanks, I was not aware of that/did not understand. It seems to be what I wanted :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-13 02:56 That is really nice. I will compare it with just motioneye that is still maintained. If motioneyeos is just an iso for raspian + motioneye pre installed, then setting it up myself is not a big deal. I'll see what the fork brings to the table. Thanks for the heads up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-13 02:57 The project was already stable, if it is just maintained functional it is good enough for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-13 03:06 I care about the project being maintained because if it is not, a security flaw may stay in it. Also, if I deploy an infrastructure based on an obsolete project, it means I am not building on solid foundations that can evolve in time. In this thread I have been given multiple solutions, including motioneye that is still developed, whereas motioneyeos is 5 years old. I don't have 5 years old software on my network. Absolutely none. My IOT devices are ones I made myself, with esphome, and they are regularly updated. My router is pfsense. My Nas is truenas. My services are self hosted and up to date. My WiFi routers are openwrt. I simply don't buy connected devices that are not open source, or I can't open source flash or something similar. Some day, I'll be better at networking, and set up vlans for closed source stuff, but I am not there yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JuniorMouse · 2023-12-13 03:18 https://github.com/bluenviron/mediamtx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-12-13 06:31 The python2 branch is just for legacy now and they are working on a python3 overhaul ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-13 11:40 Thanks, I'll look into it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JuniorMouse · 2023-12-13 16:21 Going one step further, they even list rpi cameras - [https://github.com/bluenviron/mediamtx#raspberry-pi- cameras](https://github.com/bluenviron/mediamtx#raspberry-pi-cameras) I have never tried this myself with rpi. I'm just using this to convert a usb webcam to an ip camera. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shahonseven · 2023-12-14 10:34 https://github.com/mpromonet/v4l2rtspserver
