Are there any YouTube frontends that currently support resolutions higher than 1080p? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sturgeon01 · 2023-12-11 23:46 I've been trying all the popular YouTube frontends, and as far as I can tell none of them currently support 1440p/2160p resolutions. Piped claims to on the GitHub page, but when using it those resolution options do not appear for me. When searching this issue, I see year- old references to a setting to enable higher resolutions, but that option does not seem to exist anymore. Viewtube has this currently listed as an issue, and as of a few months ago the developer said they were working on a new media player to support 1440p/2160p, but it has not yet been completed. The rest I tried don't even mention higher resolutions on their GitHub pages, so I assume it's not a priority. Of course, there's always the various apps to download YouTube videos, but those aren't ideal as you need tons of space for 4K video and downloading/processing on the fly isn't really practical. Is anyone using any YouTube frontends that work with these higher resolutions right now? Or am I just out of luck until one of these apps are updated? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TryNotToShootYoself · 2023-12-12 00:53 I know this is self-hosted and I'm not really answering your question, but most mobile clients still work. I know revanced works, and I'm pretty sure newpipe does as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sturgeon01 · 2023-12-12 01:14 Yeah I've been using revanced for years, it works great. My dilemma though is that I'd really like to move away from privacy-invasive Google accounts, and revanced requires one to save/sync watch history, subscriptions, etc with the desktop version. And as far as I can tell, newpipe does not offer any sort of syncing between devices.
