Self hosting reccomendations... reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rodehaas · 2023-12-11 22:12 So, ive been getting more indepth about self hosting. and since im on a very strict budget of 0,- i had to do some experimenting. i have a server pc with a i7-2600, 8gb, which i might need to upgrade in the future, but for now it will have to do... i have unlimited bandwith (since i live in the netherlands) with a 1Gbit glassfiber connection. no ports seem to be blocked which is even more perfect since i can do everything i want. so, i have got an xampp server ssl certified with my ip... and had mercury recieve, and send proper email from gmail adresses (but got blocked because of no authenication, just couldnt access it from outside of my lan, while i had that working before, just not together)... Why the need, simply said, storage... i recieve so many emails from so many different companies and with all my photo's and video's and files combined i have about 4 google accounts 14gb/15gb and 2 more on at least 70% of total storage. yes, i have high storage needs and i understand google just cant substain those... i also got other hosting needs, which this pc was providing before (and needs to continue providing)... but i have a couple of questions... 1. would a 1gbit connection be enough to substain high amounts of traffic who might all be downloading a big file from my site? 2. any good webhosting alternatives software alternatives? in which i can apply my ssl certificate with my ip as well. more suitable to public deployment. since i have no need for mercury in xampp, since it doenst work well, and no need for tomcat. all i need is php, apache, mysql and ftp (which could be a seperate, i dont really care) idd preferabbly use windows. but might be time to get into linux, but i never felt like using a command line interface unless while writing code or using a bat/cmd. 3. and any good mailserver alternatives instead of hmailserver or mercury? i like mercury, but some things just feel abundant. perferabbly windows again... 4. and then on the end note of it all, if i were to switch to linux for my server needs, which linux os would you all recommend (or maybe switch to windows server? idk)... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-11 22:19 4) Ubuntu LTS or Debian stable, imo. This gets asked and answered constantly here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reoccurcat · 2023-12-11 22:55 If you end up wanting to virtualize, proxmox all the way for that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BillGoats · 2023-12-11 23:19 Yahoo Mail offers 1TB of storage for free. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-11 23:24 Thats a option, but not what was asked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Karoolus · 2023-12-12 00:03 Honestly, running proxmox on an i7 2600 with 8GB RAM doesn't sound great. Better off just running plain Ubuntu/Debian with docker. If he ever upgrades the hardware, he could still virtualize his current server May not be the best solution, but it is what I would do ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-12-12 00:28 Most VPS providers have capped 1gbps bandwidth, so on that regard you should be mostly fine unless you are consistently saturating your link. I’d check what your ISP says about using your link for business/hosting purposes if you intend to get serious about people depending on your uptime. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fishfeet_ · 2023-12-12 01:07 Wow really? Time to reactivate my yahoo mail then! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rodehaas · 2023-12-12 03:41 thanks for the suggestion! will for sure look into it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rodehaas · 2023-12-12 03:45 i mean, for now its mostly me that is reliant on uptime... but depending on how im gonna use it exactly, that might change. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DIBSSB · 2023-12-12 04:01 Are you pulling leg or really it does ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rodehaas · 2023-12-12 04:02 cool, might look into that. but still leaves some other needs. and this is r/selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonsailinse · 2023-12-12 17:33 Did you really just ask for services that would host your data for you because you can’t afford the storage in your homelab and then told the first answer you got "this is r/selfhosted"? Bold. Learn to say thank you, if you can’t, better say nothing at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rodehaas · 2023-12-12 20:52 no i asked for server software, i want to host the data on a pc on my network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reoccurcat · 2023-12-19 21:39 Hence why I said “if you end up wanting to” lol under normal circumstance there aren’t not many VMs you can run concurrently with 8gb but yeah, with a hardware upgrade it’ll be more feasible
