What do you use for external monitoring? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason_Funderburker_ · 2023-12-11 06:04 I was looking for external monitoring tools to monitor if my services go down. I wasn’t really feeling setting up another site and self- hosting monitoring from there, so I went looking for third-party hosted monitoring services. I know, I know… it’s against the spirit of the subreddit. But I feel like this is one service that is fine to outsource. I’ve set up a test set of monitors on BetterStack using their free plan, and I like their embeddable status page, but the free tier lacks specific port monitoring. I also checked out UptimeRobot’s free tier, which has port monitoring, but the status page can’t be embedded. Just curious what other folks are using, and if anyone had any recommendations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BakGikHung · 2023-12-11 06:08 healthchecks.io ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mwdmeyer · 2023-12-11 06:19 [https://github.com/louislam/uptime- kuma](https://github.com/louislam/uptime-kuma) It is self hosted and great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iavael · 2023-12-11 06:40 Grafana Cloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wtfblubby · 2023-12-11 07:31 So I followed a different approach... Uptime Kuma to monitor "services" (web server, database), and healthchecks to monitor punctual jobs (backup jobs, etc) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dually · 2023-12-11 09:48 I used Icinga for several years, but got bored with it, so I built my own django app that monitors everything, using the nagios status code system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TastierSub · 2023-12-11 10:18 FYI - [Uptime Kuma supports push-based monitoring as well](https://github.com/louislam/uptime-kuma/issues/279). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sky_Linx · 2023-12-11 12:17 I have Uptime Kuma hosted in PikaPods monitoring all my web apps and cron jobs, then updown.io monitors Uptime Kuma just in case that goes down. It's super basic but has been running smoothly for over a year, and my parents haven't even noticed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScratchinCommander · 2023-12-11 15:16 It's awesome - I decided to sign up for the paid plan for $48/year since it's such a great project. You can also self-host it if you'd like. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScratchinCommander · 2023-12-11 15:17 I used to recommend UptimeRobot, but their prices went up by a lot and it's no longer worth it (not sure why they'd do that...). Uptime Kuma is a great replacement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdetmold · 2023-12-11 15:45 Do you happen to know if it can base uptime on keywords on a website like UptimeRobot? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rg00dman · 2023-12-11 15:49 Yes it has keywords support, previously I had a webservice which would show either online or offline and i could trigger an alert on the times the website showed offline ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdetmold · 2023-12-11 15:50 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shahmeers · 2023-12-11 17:08 Self hosting monitoring/alerting on the same infrastructure as the services you're monitoring isn't the greatest idea. I also use it to monitor docker etc. I then use [healthecks.io](https://healthecks.io) to monitor my uptime kuma site. this way I know if say a docker container fails or doesn't come up, but I also have something external that will tell me if my connection in general is down. This way I can continue to self-host 95% of my monitoring, and then just have a simple up/down for the home internet connection external works for me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason_Funderburker_ · 2023-12-11 19:23 Fantastic, everyone! Thank you for all the suggestions! Definitely seems like uptime-kuma is the winner here. I'll start messing around with it and see what I can get set up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dreniarb · 2023-12-11 20:21 I have two remote locations. Mainly with PRTG, but also some custom scripts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FluffyMumbles · 2023-12-11 23:07 [https://hetrixtools.com/](https://hetrixtools.com/) They have a very reasonable SMS alert offering too. I have my Caddy server responding on a particular port. If my line goes down, HetrixTools sends me an SMS. I get another when it's back up with a note of how long the outage was for. I have monitors for my other public-facing services too, but only SMS setup for my entire internet service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chandz05 · 2023-12-11 23:46 I host uptime-kuma on a free AWS tier to monitor services I host at home. Works really well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- birdsofprey02 · 2023-12-11 23:49 Is free tier still good for just one year? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chandz05 · 2023-12-11 23:54 Yeah. There's also "always free". You just have ensure your services are within the always free confines. I use uptime kuma’s pull feature to have the internal UK monitor hit a url on my external UK monitor. The external UK monitor also checks a few URLs that I have exposed to the Interwebz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chandz05 · 2023-12-12 01:51 I feel like I read it somewhere in the docs when I was spinning it up. I would have to find it again. My EC2 free year expired last month, was only using it as a SOCKS5 for SearXNG, but the proxy I'm using now is terrible, so I might have to spin up one of the free Oracle ones. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chandz05 · 2023-12-12 02:06 Ah interesting.
