Jesus fuck this sub is toxic. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmuEggFarmer · 2023-12-11 04:31 Earlier today I cross posted a post I made about having been gifted a server and simply asked what I could do with it... Beyond the assholeish comments I received dozens of fucked up messages. I've since deleted the cross post, and have no clue what the you all have going on in here but, you can fuck right off with that shit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Timely-Response-2217 · 2023-12-11 04:37 Welcome to the internet. Everyone here needs more human interaction, sun, and to learn to dial it down to 3. People hover around 8 and are just raring to go higher. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AdmiralPoopyDiaper · 2023-12-11 04:37 RIP your karma? What’s the point of this post if not farm more downvotes? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clovepalmer · 2023-12-11 04:38 R u really an emu egg farmer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmbajadorDeCristo · 2023-12-11 04:42 Don't take the Lord's name in vain. Other than that, get some fresh air, enjoy your server, and have a blessed day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmuEggFarmer · 2023-12-11 04:42 I have a few emus. Don't actually farm their eggs, but seemed to be a fun name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AllTheModzAreCancer · 2023-12-11 04:43 INB4 thekrautboy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OhMyForm · 2023-12-11 04:44 All of the og people bailed for Lemmy. That said there's a pile of people who are still lingering most of them are project maintainers. Some are super nice and some are toxic. I think the main thing you need to think of is what kind of problem do you want to solve? Once you figure that out find your way to any of the many "awesome-somethingsomethings" lists and come back here when you get addicted and find other people posting here about projects they just learned about that solves problem X for them that you never realized was a problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThePixlPirate · 2023-12-11 04:45 Imagine raging this hard over random names on Reddit ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-11 04:47 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThePixlPirate · 2023-12-11 04:54 Imagine caring about karma….what significance does it hold literally, at all?!? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JoeyZimbada · 2023-12-11 04:54 Ha! Literally thought you were speaking in code referring to downvotes! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-11 05:14 What's wrong with kraut? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-11 05:17 None, but if you say a logical argument and you get 100 downvotes, that means 100 people don't understand your logical argument and are happily and gladly just pushing a button instead of having a discussion about said argument. And this is in the end sad because you never hear **why** these people take issue with your logical argument. You can neither learn something new, nor can you convince them to open their minds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thegreatincognitum · 2023-12-11 05:26 🤷‍♀️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atika · 2023-12-11 05:30 And in your opinion this post makes it less or more toxic? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nonlinear_nyc · 2023-12-11 05:42 Makes sense that a self-hosted community wouldn't belong to a non- self-hosted platform. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clovepalmer · 2023-12-11 05:53 It sounds like you've run into a herd of neckbeards here. They're harmless in the real world, venomous online. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Disastrous_Elk_6375 · 2023-12-11 06:09 And how does that make *you* feel about it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lanky_Information825 · 2023-12-11 07:28 Welcome to the world wide web of social deficits :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThinkExtension2328 · 2023-12-11 07:51 Welcome to reddit , most users are divergent thinkers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-11 08:47 TL;DR: Grow a pair. If you get offended by strangers on the web you might need to build up a resistance to said environment. We are all strangers here, without any common social norm or culture, from all around the globe. What might be offensive in your culture, might be normal in OP’s culture, thus the discrepancy in perception. Just don’t take everything personal, look at it from a far, and only try to be logical not emotional, and skip polite etiquette, this is a tech sub, not a Knigge sub. Ask questions, get answers, period. If you don’t like a statement, ignore it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- crossower · 2023-12-11 09:18 https://old.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/18fbi06/i_acquired_a_dell _power_edge_t430_what_do_i_do/ You got 1 snarky comment (which you kinda deserved) and 1 comment pointing you to the sidebar/wiki. In what way is that assholeish or toxic? If these are the kinds of posts you're going to make here then perhaps it is you that should be doing to fucking right off part. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wplinge1 · 2023-12-11 09:20 > All of the og people bailed for Lemmy. Both the Lemmies in the stickied post are orders of magnitude less active than here (.world has 2 posts today, .ml has 2 this week) so I'm not sure how true that is any more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok_Expert_5751 · 2023-12-11 11:46 I find these subreddits to be filled with two general extremes of personalities: 1. Quiet professionals who stay quiet and get the job done. 2. Passionate pontificators whose goal in life seems to be projecting their opinions as broadly as possible regardless of any gaps in their knowledge. I try to find the first group and learn from them while ignoring the second group. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isThisRight-- · 2023-12-11 12:23 There is a small third group. They are the quiet professionals who stay quiet until they’re tired of the second groups nonsense and post a single snarky comment and never go back to the thread or read the comments. I’m probably apart of this group. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Internal-Initial-835 · 2023-12-11 12:44 You do get those types here. More so than other subs i've noticed. Seems to be cliques and if you upset one of the members of a said clique then they all jump on you regardless lol. Just one of those things. I'd report any of the messages that were innapropriate for sure though. There's no need for that. I had it the other day. Sadly the level of toxicity some people have means that a lot of people, myself included won't post here in future and its the people that need the help and guidence that will lose out. It's not a great look tbh and not a place i wan't to contribute. I know of others in the same boat. There are other subs and places that are, in my opinion, better and you can contribute there without getting bullied ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san · 2023-12-11 13:55 Well, for reddit standards this sub is not at all toxic/assholeish... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-12-11 14:04 This is being part of group 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san · 2023-12-11 14:07 yeah. I was really happy an alternative existed, but its severely hampered by the network effect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OhMyForm · 2023-12-11 14:49 I don't know what that means but its going through growing pains I believe the only person running Lemmy development is very politically opinionated which is fine but the reason that engaging discussion happens is usually due to people contributing interesting or new perspectives and you cant have that if everyone shares the same perspective. We require differing opinions so we have a reason to go there to broaden our understandings of the world or at least to be entertained and if everyone agrees with you all the time you might as well sit in a room with a mirror alone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jogai-san · 2023-12-11 15:05 Its not the software, its the users: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-11 16:48 So #1 never writes anything, how can you profit off of that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isThisRight-- · 2023-12-11 17:06 Is it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LastTreestar · 2023-12-12 16:37 The entire point system needs scrapped. It only encourages bad behavior. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-12 17:31 Agreed!
