VPN in the States while living abroad - speeds reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- korea_home · 2023-12-10 22:22 I am starting to fall down this huge rabbit hole surrounding VPN servers and optimization and speed. Here's the current break down: I live in South Korea a majority of the year. I work remotely for a US based company doing work completely in the US. To solve some issues with a few nosy IT people, I set up internet service at a relatives house, originally I was using Spectrum's 500mb service but their upload speeds are capped at 20mbps. I now have AT&T Fiber setup with 1gb up and down. Originally I had the Wireguard server running on an ASUS router and I was using the VPNFusion utility to connect the SK based router to that server. Under Spectrum my speeds were abysmal, 10-15mbps BEST. I put together a new setup for the AT&T service in the hopes that I could eliminate hardware and upload limitations. Now I have a Unifi Express hosting Wireguard and tests are giving me 50-60 mbps both in the States and in South Korea. I am not sure exactly where the issue is residing but I am thinking that CPU power in the UE is not that much better than the ASUS router I was using (better is subjective but you know what I mean). So here is the rabbit hole, should I: 1. accept it for what it is and 50-60 is as good as it will get 2. F with MTUs in the hope that I can tweak something (I would really like o avoid this level of keyboard banging) 3. Build an ungodly i9 13th gen beast to run my router/server (hosting other things as well) Stipulations: a. paid services use well known and documented IP blocks and show up in weird locations when geo-locating in O365 so it needs to be a home service b. Since it's at a relatives house it can't be a jet engine. c. I need as much through put as possible seeing as my job revolves entirely access. ps. I cannot host the VPN on the company machine I have because they took local admin away and gave us potatoes. Any ideas? Suggests from those who have experience with this? Thanks y'all! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ericesev · 2023-12-10 22:49 >I live in South Korea a majority of the year. Let your employer know where you're working. That way you won't need to use this odd setup, and you can tell those nosy IT people to go away - this is all approved by your management. There may be some clients that don't want their data accessed outside the US, so your management can also make sure those aren't assigned to you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- korea_home · 2023-12-10 22:52 Management is aware, client data is not handled openly. I got that covered. Trying to look into the VPN server speeds issue. Thanks for the suggestions though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytepond · 2023-12-10 23:31 You could use a tiny/mini/micro pc with a wireguard server. That should be significantly faster ---------------------------------------------------------------------- realraghavgupta · 2023-12-10 23:43 use raspberry pi or tiny pc as wireguard server, or install [https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl- mt2500/](https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt2500/) or look into https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt6000/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- korea_home · 2023-12-11 00:25 I use the gl-inet axt 1800 when I am on the road away from my office. This won't solve the issue, at least in my mind, as have less compute process than the Unifi Express. rPis are a cute novelty/home lab toy. Got lots of them, not enough though, maybe if I could get one of those rPi5 it might be worth toying with, ARM has come a long way. Again, thanks for the recommendations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pandaeye0 · 2023-12-11 03:35 Maybe I haven't read the post thoroughly, but would the bottleneck be actually between south korea and your home? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- socalwrxx · 2023-12-11 08:01 Something seems off about your results. I run a wireguard server on a $5/month linode (now akamai) server and can easily get 100mbps+ from my home 200mbps internet. Wireguard is very lightweight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- korea_home · 2023-12-11 08:01 i thought that as well but i have a surfshark wireguard out of atlanta and it gets 150-200mbps. also, tested the in home vpn on a second network on site and it also got 50-60mbps. it’s really weird. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pandaeye0 · 2023-12-11 08:30 I mean the link between south korea and home without VPN. Have you speed tested it?
