Backup of Google Drive (and photos?) to local disk (not to Google Drive) reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noaccess · 2023-12-10 18:09 Is there a docker app out there that does it? It only looks like duplicati syncs to Google Drive, not from. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hotshot55 · 2023-12-10 18:19 No need for a docker app, rclone can do this very simply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-10 18:21 https://rclone.org https://hub.docker.com/r/rclone/rclone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GameKing505 · 2023-12-11 01:59 Folks are suggesting rclone but I’m pretty sure rclone can’t back up google photos in their original quality which for me is a nonstarter. Just an FYI ---------------------------------------------------------------------- readit-on-reddit · 2023-12-11 04:07 Obligatory reminder that rclone does not download from Google Photos at original quality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Innocent__Rain · 2023-12-11 07:46 I personally found that just requesting the data from drive, photos etc. manually in google takeout every now and then is the easiest for me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noaccess · 2023-12-11 14:13 thats what i have been doing, if its the easiest thing to do then i guess i will keep manually doing that on a regular basis. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-11 15:10 Well, If Google doesn't allow download the original files via it's API that's most certainly Googles doing and not rclone's https://forum.rclone.org/t/google-photos-downloads-compressed/11632 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-11 15:17 That's because Google put that limitation on their API ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Innocent__Rain · 2023-12-11 15:26 I ofc can't say it's the easiest with certainty but i have yet to find something better, do let me know though if you find anything! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- readit-on-reddit · 2023-12-11 15:37 Never said it was an rclone bug. From the perspective of the end user, rclone does not download media at original quality and that is really what matters. The details as to why that's the case are not very relevant. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-11 15:41 No tool which used the Google Photo API can download the photos in full resolution. It's broken by design. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- readit-on-reddit · 2023-12-11 15:47 Honestly you reply as if you were a bot. What you are saying has nothing to do with my point. rclone doesn't download at original quality and I only mention it because that was the current recommendation. The fact that it's Google's fault is irrelevant, it's still important to know. Frankly I wouldn't have released the Google Photos functionality in the first place if I was an rclone developer. So many people use rclone for Google Photos and it's silently downloading files with worse quality. That is not good design. If a feature doesn't fully work, REGARDLESS OF WHO IS AT FAULT, then you shouldn't add it because a lot of people will not read small letters at the bottom of the documentation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-11 15:50 Your reply is not helpful to the "end-user" because they will assume it's a shortcoming of rclone and any other tool WILL download the photos at full resolution. They can stop looking because NO tool which used googles API is able to that. You are trying to be helpful but saying rclone can't do this while no tool can do this is not helping, but contributing to the confusion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- readit-on-reddit · 2023-12-11 16:32 > Because they will assume it's a shortcoming of rclone and another tool WILL download the photos at full resolution. What are you talking about? That is not at all a natural conclusion from what I said. Multiple people recommended rclone and I pointed out the limitation to avoid loss of data to OP. That is extremely helpful and the natural response. To say otherwise is bewildering to me. OP also asked about ways to download photos he didn't say they have to use the API. A program that partners with Google might correctly download media because they won't use the official API. So why would I make any strong claims about whether or not it is possible to download photos at original quality in the first place? That is a very stupid and strong claim that is bound to be out of date at some point. Take a step back and think about what you are saying. Pointing out a limitation requires no extra assumptions. Going off on a tangent about reasons why the limitations exist in the first place is more confusing to OP than anything. Completely irrelevant. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GameKing505 · 2023-12-11 19:41 I know, and that's shitty of them. But it doesn't really matter who's fault it is... just pointing out that rclone won't back up full res photos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zakafx · 2023-12-12 01:07 the shitty thing about google photos and using rclone is that it downloads compressed versions of your media (API limitation, not rclones fault per se).
