Tailscale's actual scope WRT to data usage reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GenerousAccord · 2023-12-10 17:13 After some more Googling I've found that Tailscale mainly routes traffic between our own devices. This is why there's no data cap. Now I see Tailscale as a limited version of what I do, which is use a public VPS to route traffic from the Internet to my home machine running my services as well as, my peers can talk to each other over my Wireguard VPN. I can also funnel 100% of my traffic outbound on a home device through my VPS. The main limitation I have is my VPS provider's data cap which with Oracle Cloud on the free tier is 10TB. Now I see why people like Tailscale, for the limited use case of your own devices talking to each other, one being a server running something like NextCloud perhaps, it makes things easy. I like and prefer my use of Wireguard + public VPS, but now I see why there's interest in Tailscale for selfhosters who are hosting private services only and no public services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ericesev · 2023-12-10 17:54 They have perhaps the best write-up of how Wireguard NAT traversal works on their blog too.
