Everything is working :( reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schistosomnia · 2023-12-10 15:05 I started to play with a second hand mini pc and self hosting in the summer, and have just been casually experimenting since. Right now I'm doing multiple virtual NICs to optimize both my wireguard or tailscale tunnel but it just doesn't work. I guess I've also taken a break and in that realized how much I don't know even though im running a fair number of services. I'm also going the VLAN route as well so my ip cameras can't touch the Internet. I guess I was more so referring to appropriate firewall rules and nginx specific settings, so routing in general. Instead, you can pre-install all of your packages using packer (https://developer.hashicorp.com/packer/integrat ions/hetznercloud/hcloud), then use your custom image with Terraform, with scripts running as part of cloud-init, so all of your scripts and the basic Kubernetes setup is all baked in, and take as little time to setup as possible, making your infrastructure immutable, and therefore predictable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Venusn99 · 2023-12-11 01:50 Is there any room for Ansible if I am running all the the apps in docker? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dogeek · 2023-12-11 02:02 Running a mail server is not difficult. Or follow my previous plan of doing things incrementally: install Ubuntu Server and secure the server, install docker, set up the different applications one by one? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -rwsr-xr-x · 2023-12-11 02:49 > Or follow my previous plan of doing things incrementally: install Ubuntu Server and secure the server, install docker, set up the different applications one by one? [Cattle, not Pets](https://cloudscaling.com/blog/cloud-computing/the- history-of-pets-vs-cattle/), always. Keep your machines/containers ephemeral, and your configuration managed, so you can burn one of the machines and reimage/redeploy it in minutes, pushing the latest stable configuration back to it in no time. If you hand-build machines/VM/image/containers, you're making it much more difficult to recreate them if you need to, unless you have that configuration managed in some system outside of that machine/VM/container, like a private Github repo, or your own, self- hosted Gitlab instance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Madh2orat · 2023-12-11 03:19 Had to do this when I experienced a fire. Lost everything. I had my configs backed up to the cloud, and after I got to the point of rebuilding, it was 1. Install OS. 2. Restore backup configs. 3. Docker-compose up -d ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Threezeley · 2023-12-11 03:23 I really don't get when people offer me access to their Plex. Many home labs can be completely restored with a backup, making this approach not necessary. This approach is nicer when there are many systems or when changes to those systems should go through an additional process. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moniker___ · 2023-12-11 05:26 Automation workflows to see if your updates will be successful or immediately break, and some sort of strategy for whether to deploy or hold back & alert. Slightly more time consuming: throw out all those public containers that are pushed by who knows and contains ????. figure out how releases are tagged in git, and periodically check after pulling! Then just build everything yourself using your own dockerfile, making sure you follow whatever best practices you like (non-root services, distroless if the app itself doesn't need too shell out, stuff like that). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moniker___ · 2023-12-11 05:28 While you make those containers you can generate SBOMs for everything and each update. However, it opened my eyes to how little I knew about CEPH. So, instead of taking the easy route of Proxmox based CEPH, I built my own cluster (still an easy way) with cephadm atop debian. Has been a great experience. CEPH seems very important to OpenStack, and presumably several other technologies are as well. Learn them first, then graduate to OpenStack. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- laidback_01 · 2023-12-11 05:42 totally agree. Actually configuring those resources to do things is better left to other tools, although ideally you will want to simply be deploying premade container images. The setup I am slowly moving to is having a CI system build OCI container images, then deploy with TF inside podman. Also, TF's hcl language is sooooo much better than YAML for defining infra. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pokemonthug · 2023-12-11 20:50 Id only share fun things with siblings. The newer image version would trigger a migration and introduce new database fields. Just downgrading the version may brick the app. I once had an issue with plausible, as some db tables were adjusted or something like this. Had to rollback the version as well as restore the database from backups. Own fault though when using latest tag.
