Backup storage recommendations reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spectre1989 · 2023-12-10 14:25 Hi all, I'm a self hosting noob in need of recommendations. My issue is that I'm a data hoarder, I have a load of stuff in my Google drive which I very rarely need but I don't want to lose. The yearly costs are only going up so I want to try self hosting. I'm thinking along the lines of, run a server in my house from a raspberry pi or an old PC with a large amount of storage. Then in case my house burns down or the machine has some catastrophic failure I could have a friend run a server in their house which mirrors the same data. Something I love about Google drive is the virtual filesystem, but from what I can gather most things like nextcloud etc support this too. If I'm going to have a buddy run a server in their house for redundancy then it would be good if the data was stored encrypted so that we can't access each other's private files. I don't need things like collaboration tools, email integration etc, I'd rather have something which ran faster and was less complicated with fewer bells and whistles if there's a tradeoff to be had - from what I've read things like seafile would be more suitable for me than nextcloud. Given I want at least 2 servers which automatically mirror all data for redundancy, should I actually be looking at distributed file systems like Ceph? I'm a programmer by trade so I can probably deal with a certain amount of fiddly technical setup if needs be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-10 14:44 If your goal is mainly backup and redundancy. Go with a cheap dual bay NAS and run SHR or RAID1. And just use the NAS backup software to sync remotely to your freinds house. If you want to go the DIY route and no RAID, buy a second hand enterprise miniPC (costs like $100) and an external USB drive and install TrueNAS on it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-12-10 16:43 I used to used Gsuite as well before prices skyrocketed. If you are still open to cloud options check out Crashplan Pro/Enterprise. They've been around for 15+ years and their pricing model has never changed. UNLIMITED storage for $88/yr or $8/mon. Gives you 2 licenses. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DarkKnyt · 2023-12-10 18:29 Borg supports file level restore, encrypted storage, deduplication, and incremental transfer with ssh. It's foss, has cli and a GUI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spectre1989 · 2023-12-10 23:12 Thanks this is a great alternative actually (also found similar with backblaze), I could have a NAS or something to store the full data set, selectively sync the bits I want to my PCs, and back up the NAS on something like crashplan
