Tailscale on a travel router: game changer reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jefferson-not-jackso · 2023-12-09 23:28 Took a business trip last week. In preparation, I picked up a GL.iNet GL-MT3000 travel router and installed Tailscale on it. I also picked up an Amazon Firestick and put Jellyfin on it. I connected the Firestick and my other devices to the router before I left. At the hotel, I plugged my router in, connected it the wifi, and all my devices were then connected. I then was able to seamlessly stream directly from my home server using jellyfin and tailscale. It was awesome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nunbar · 2023-12-09 23:39 Maybe I'm missing something, but why did you need tailscale to watch content from your server via jellyfin? Isn't jellyfin supposed to work outside your home network? I use Plex wherever I want without the need for a VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liveyourdreamsmax · 2023-12-09 23:48 How would it work outside the network? Plex has a paid tier that provides that functionality through their cloud services. Jellyfin is all local. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- johnlepdx · 2023-12-09 23:52 He’s remote and didn’t have to expose ports to stream from his server at home ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nunbar · 2023-12-09 23:55 Ok, I see my mistake, I didn't know jellyfin was local only. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nunbar · 2023-12-09 23:55 Got it, thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zakafx · 2023-12-10 00:17 jellyfin isnt just local, expose it with a reverse proxy and voila.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zakafx · 2023-12-10 00:18 thats wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zakafx · 2023-12-10 00:20 reverse proxy a service (jellyfin) and expose it with SSL, and voila, you have access to your content from anywhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- coffinspacexdragon · 2023-12-10 00:21 This "local only" talk is absolute nonsense. That's not even a thing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zakafx · 2023-12-10 00:22 exactly, im kinda like "wtf?" lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- coffinspacexdragon · 2023-12-10 00:26 No, like op has stated you can utilize your Jellyfin instance anywhere you want just by exposing like anything else. Plex apparently just makes you pay for it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darklord3_ · 2023-12-10 00:51 That's plex relay, and it should maimly be used when yky can't get a direct connection, and its not paid its free, and quality limited. Same way people access plex they access jellyfin, reverse proxy or port forward. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ieris19 · 2023-12-10 00:51 People downvoting you need to learn English lol. All local can also mean “On premise”. Unlike Plex, Jellyfin doesn’t run off of some corporate server in the cloud, it is fully local, or “self hosted”. The original comment is clearly talking about Plex’s ability to “just work” and this comment is refuting that… ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emprahsFury · 2023-12-10 01:07 How do you connect the wan of the router through the captive portal of the hotel? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beesuptomyknees · 2023-12-10 01:16 Why can’t your laptop connect to the WiFi and you use tailscale (or any VPN) on your laptop to connect to your home network. In my experience, having all my traffic go through one travel router slows down the network to all devices connected to it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- d-cent · 2023-12-10 01:43 What if you have multiple services? Doing the reverse proxy method is already more time consuming than Tailscale, now adding another one for another service. You can also simplify access to multiple devices. Unless you are hosting for more than 3 people, Tailscale is the way to go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cmg065 · 2023-12-10 01:46 This is useful if you travel with multiple devices. For example if I travel with 4 people with a cell phone and tablet each then that’s 8 clients that have to connect to tail scale. If you have a travel router then it’s just one tail scale instance back home. Another use case I’ve seen is some people run proxmox and run their travel NAS, cache, router on one box. Can be handy if you have no or limited connection to run a jellyfin server local with some content on an ssd to share with others or play a game that supports playing on lan together. If you do have a connection and lan cache running you can save bandwidth. Necessary, no. But definitely cool to have options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zakafx · 2023-12-10 01:46 what lol? if you think by adding one entry to nginx is time consuming, buddy, i gotta tell you: theres worse things to worry about how time is consumed than making one entry to a proxy list. the average person is usually hosting one instance of jellyfin, which would already have been set up one time only when it was deployed? sorry i am not following you here. speed is not a concern. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neil_Salmon · 2023-12-10 01:47 A Firestick and a travel router take much less space than a laptop. I do something similar with a raspberry pi (rather than a Firestick) - everything including cables fits in a little lunch box. On a business trip you may have a laptop but I definitely don't do anything personal on my work computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neil_Salmon · 2023-12-10 01:49 I'd add a universal remote to your travel kit. Some hotel TV remotes won't let you change input or get into the settings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beesuptomyknees · 2023-12-10 01:52 Sounds to me like a VPN on all of those devices would do all of this pretty simply. And Jesus Christ bringing your NAS? Ffs just download some movies via Plex if you know you won’t have internet. I’m all for mucking around in the name of learning but sometimes I feel like the people in this sub just love to make life difficult. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anturk · 2023-12-10 01:57 Exactly this GL.iNet has three options factory default, copy on the device mac address that you are on and manual mac address input. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liveyourdreamsmax · 2023-12-10 01:59 You got me, thank you. Person I responded to commented regarding default functionality…not what about exposing services outward after setting up the defaults. Apparently I need to caveat everything I write by saying “by default” or “without tailscaling” or without reverse proxying etc etc. Clearly the idea that the person I responded to asked a question comparing a by default local only service to plex that offers cloud connectivity as a built in feature….well my response was silly because of course you can expose anything on your local network outside your local network? No duh. Oh well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shahmeers · 2023-12-10 02:00 > Doing th reverse proxy method is already more time consuming than Tailscale Only if you're using the wrong tools. Everyone has different needs than you and might be traveling longer so I am glad that you've found a solution that works for you. I've traveled for 6+ months without reliable internet multiple times. Ask any military member how often you're traveling without internet but you have a tablet to watch movies on and an outlet to charge your devices with. In that scenario by running a lightweight NAS on some flash storage allows movie sharing regardless of internet availability. Again, great for LAN games as well. I used a Firestick for a while but I found the performance got worse over time - even navigating menus was super slow. Part of that might have been overheating - I think they're not well ventilated. But if they've improved, it may be a good option for me. Definitely smaller in the suitcase. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ieris19 · 2023-12-10 02:25 Please read the context again. Absolutely everything* people recommend about additional steps to add a domain name or VPN or nginx proxy or whatever the hell else is optional additional either security or convenience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- onegoodpenguin · 2023-12-10 04:09 Doesn’t Plex just use UPnP to ask your router to forward the requested ports? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeverrSummer · 2023-12-10 04:10 Jellyfin's external access is configured in the same way as Plex and neither require a VPN. Main problem I've found is generally due to per-device bandwidth limiting on guest network where you're right... putting all your stuff behind the travel router means as far as hotel network is concerned your entire network is one device and everything behind it shares that 'per device' bandwidth. Not much you can do about that unfortunately but it's more a NAT thing, not a VPN thing per se. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tannman129 · 2023-12-10 07:31 Is this exclusive to jellyfin? I had the exact scenario at a hotel with a cheap old samsung tv I was surprised the idea worked on first try. Now you could use Wireguard etc. to connect to home network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PjUo09Zpe1vyd0tXQzz6 · 2023-12-10 19:43 It's awesome only if you know nothing about networking/Linux and therefore nothing about WireGuard, consiquently paying for your lack of knowledge with your privacy. Or it's a marketing ploy by Tailscale, otherwise why not mention the more agile ZeroTier? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkelement · 2023-12-10 20:30 It doesn’t require enough setup or tinkering. If all you want to do is have a way to connect to some movies you downloaded for offline use, you should build a mini NUC system that has nvme drives, preferably in some raid config for redundancy. Pairing this with a travel router running proxmox (so you can run other vms like a vpn dns sink when you have internet, or have a copy of your plex) lets you create a WiFi network you can connect to and access these files. Simply bringing an external hard drive with all your media on it and plugging that into a computer, that wouldn’t work would it? Surely that’s too simple and straightforward. /s If not obvious. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eastoncrafter · 2023-12-10 22:27 Would wireguard allow bypassing artificial speed limiters? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NomadicWorldCitizen · 2023-12-10 22:49 Nice. I don't need one but I would like to have one :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tom_bull · 2023-12-10 23:27 I’ve got a few older gl.iNet travel routers - my day-to-day is the GL- AR300M (Shadow). Which is fine, but WireGuard / Tailscale speeds top out at about 10-15mbps. Still, on a fairly standard 60Wh battery pack, doing WiFi forwarding plus VPN… which is mostly how I use it when travelling, working on sites, etc… it’ll do at least 60 hours of usage… so around 1W power consumption on average. I can see the max power usage of the newer routers like the Beryl is around 10-15W from the spec sheet. I doubt they use that continuously in operation, but I’ve never seen anyone do a real-world power usage test… that would be super useful to me when my main use case is running off a battery pack. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anturk · 2023-12-10 23:36 Oh that cute litte square box thing i get what you want to know i can meter the consumption for you if you want buy which scenario do you want me to test? I think 5 watt is the bare minimum and if you put it under load it can reach the 10 watt. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anturk · 2023-12-10 23:42 Definitly get you i wanted to buy one for a long time and did it never regret it. Use it a lot now not only on trips but also when i am working off side. But i have to say i also use it for my livestream gigs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tom_bull · 2023-12-10 23:58 That would be so amazing! If you were metering it… the things I’d like to know are any/all of: idle consumption when set to WiFi repeater mode with no ethernet plugged in, WiFi repeater in use with a client downloading, WiFi AP or router connected to a single ethernet port (power use will jump significantly plugged into ethernet), WiFi repeater + VPN in use. Probably most important is just the idle power use when it’s set to WiFi repeater mode and no USB/ethernet plugged in / not really doing anything. That is for the most part what’s going to determine how long it lasts for me… because that’s the mode it’ll spend most of its time in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anturk · 2023-12-11 00:19 Alright man, i will test these for you i guess i will have the results by Tuesday. I think i even will add some things to test i am also really curious what the exact usage is of the GL.iNet. I will make a spreadsheet. For you info i have the GL.iNet GL-MT3000 Wi-Fi 6 Beryl AX. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anturk · 2023-12-11 00:19 RemindMe! 1 day "Do the testing" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anturk · 2023-12-11 00:21 RemindMe! That would be enough for me to easily get a full day out of a decent size battery pack - which is plenty for me. Definitely going to order a Beryl AX 👍 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BlinisAreDelicious · 2023-12-11 00:56 Thanks for sanity ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beesuptomyknees · 2023-12-11 01:09 Why stop there? Never expect something to be/stay free. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Grand-Pudding6040 · 2023-12-11 03:08 Yea, but. Don't you still need their servers to act as upstream? going for something like OpenVPN or Wireguard would be better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anturk · 2023-12-11 03:19 I don’t think so not used it by myself but they can always remove the option for selfhosted in their software and apps. Tailscale is of course Wireguard but because they make it so easy to work with in a nice gui and simple steps it’s so handy to use even i sometimes use it to connect servers together to test something quickly. But they already upgraded the free tier and it doesn’t cost extra for them. But this can also of course be a trick to encourage Tailscale make it populair and well known and then screw people over and make it more a commercal product wouldn’t be the first company. But they do a good job for now and it’s a great service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-12-11 03:20 Probably not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ang3l12 · 2023-12-11 06:02 It’s got a cool tamagotchi game, which is nice!
