Looking to reinvigorate my self hosting setup reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- coveorder · 2023-12-09 23:11 I don't keep up with computer hardware these days and I'm relatively new to selfhosting. I did run Jellyfin for a few years until the system hdd died recently. Now I'm here in an attempt to improve what I had going on in the past. **Current State:** This is setup that I had running for a few years: * Optiplex 790 i7 with Debian and running Jellyfin with a couple of remote users. * Raspberry Pi 4 running OpenMediaVault as a NAS I had 2 7TB hard drives connected via usb to the Pi 4 for storage and backup. The Optiplex running Debian would mount the storage drive over the local network. This setup worked well with Jellyfin transcoding and whatnot. **Future State:** I have in my possession an Optiplex 7060 Small Form Factor with 64 GB or Ram i708700 3.20 GHz I want to run Jellyfin and other containerized apps like Immich, etc. I'm familiar with Docker, and to a lesser extent, Kubernetes. I would like to be able to access and manage stuff from some custom domain over internet instead of directly using my ip address like I was doing previously for Jellyfin. **Questions:** Should I run the containers on the system drive (2 TB SSD) and for the volumes use a mounted storage drive over the network like I was doing before? Should I connect the storage drives directly to the system via usb or PCIe? What is the best way to connect the storage drives if I would like to add more space in the future? Should I continue to use the Pi 4 as the NAS or are there more performant options for storage? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-10 00:04 If you want to keep it simple , continue with debian on the 7060 and run everything on docker there. Install Nginx Proxy Manager and buy a domain name. When you have it, set up a wildcard certificate for your domain in NGPM. And from there you can start adding all your services and have NGPM point subdomains directly to their corresponding service IP’s. I.e jellyfin.example.com. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- coveorder · 2023-12-10 00:23 \> Do you need the usb hd on the network or can you just plug it in to the 7060 instead? This is one of the things that I was asking about. Originally I had the drives plugged the Pi 4 running OMV so that OMV could do backups and so that I could use space on the drive for dumping files over the network as well. If I can get away with plugging drives directly into the 7060, I think that would be nice. Thanks for the tips! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NinjaFragrant7710 · 2023-12-10 09:45 I would use the system drive to download and run the containers. As for data I would definitely use a different disk, preferably via PCiE/SATA rather than USB. Be sure to mount the volume at startup (add the disk in fstab file by its UUID). I am actually running a very similar setup using a NUC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- coveorder · 2023-12-10 10:34 What would be the best way to handle expansion, if I connected the drive directly? Can I chain multiple drives from one PCIE or SATA port? Or would my only option be to get a larger drive drive when that time comes?
