Is my dns safe? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 21:56 So this is my dns settings. ( 8 8 8 8 ) ( 8 8 4 4 ) ( 192 168 * * ) why is there a 3rd dns not just the primary and secondry? Is this 3rd dns a privacy concern if someone compromised my wifi? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SeirWasTaken · 2023-12-09 22:05 seems like the third is your router ip address, pretty normal. my Asus router has an option to advertise its ip address. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- multidollar · 2023-12-09 22:11 Is the 192.168 address the same address as your router's IP? Two has just been the default for most systems, it's entirely possible to set more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- APIeverything · 2023-12-09 22:16 Omg, I would unplug my internet ASAP ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YankeeLimaVictor · 2023-12-09 22:19 Lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:21 lol, i know it's a noob question. But we all asked noob questions to learn about anything ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:21 That's what I thought. Would it cause any problems? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScribeOfGoD · 2023-12-09 22:22 Because it’s your router probably ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:23 Yes, they are the same ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-09 22:24 Then ask and learn in /r/HomeNetworking /r/TechSupport /r/LinuxQuestions and subs like that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clintkev251 · 2023-12-09 22:24 No. It's pretty standard for a router to hand out it's own IP as a DNS server via DHCP. If you review the config on your router, you'll probably see that it's just forwarding to a public DNS resolver, either run by your ISP or one of the other common resolvers that you're already familiar with ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Imaginary_Sort1070 · 2023-12-09 22:24 Are you hiding your LAN IP lol? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:24 So the ip is acting as a dns? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- multidollar · 2023-12-09 22:27 So where is your worry coming from? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:28 Because its get changed time to time and who needs to know it tho. Wouldn't help in anything. I know i shouldn't hide it tho ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:30 A friend who told me for half an hour that ip shouldn't act as dns ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whatever_42 · 2023-12-09 22:32 An IP cannot act as a DNS. They are two different concepts. The IP address identifies the machine (network interface to be precise). That machine, in your case your router most likely) runs a DNS server which listens on port 53 UDP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:34 Okay now i got it. So my router it self acts as a dns? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:35 And why not post here? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- multidollar · 2023-12-09 22:41 Your friend is wrong. The router being the DNS host is the most common setup in all homes. That’s how home networking is kept simple, the ISP programmes their router with their settings on the box, tells everything to use the router as DNS. Means if the router comes with functionality like adding custom entries or hosts services, you can look them up with a name. Makes things like http://ISPname possible to get to your router etc and make things simple for home users that never even realised there’s a router. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-09 22:42 Because its not a techsupport sub? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:45 So why it doesn't use primary and secondry dns instead of this? Wouldn't this be easier? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gold_rush_doom · 2023-12-09 22:46 All home routers do DNS forwarding. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- multidollar · 2023-12-09 22:47 I would guess someone has gone in and added the others manually, which is fine. Does someone else control it at home? It could be the default settings. Although, ISPs rarely if ever use DNS servers that aren’t theirs so I’d guess someone has put them there. Not nefarious, just someone must have done it in my opinion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:48 Maybe I was wrong to post here. Next time this wouldn't happen. Thanks for letting me know ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:50 But if you also read the description of this sub. It simply allows me to post about this topic ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CrispyMcB4c0n · 2023-12-09 22:53 Use Quad9’s DNS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 22:53 I did put cloud flare primary and secondry dns ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-09 22:58 I didnt say its not allowed. I meant other subs are better suited then here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 23:03 Didn't think about another subs sorry about that. Next time i would post in a suitable sub ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Varnish6588 · 2023-12-09 23:09 you are worried about privacy but yet you are using Google's DNS? Have a look at CloudFlare privacy DNS or others similar https://www.privacytools.io/encrypted-dns ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 23:18 Going to read about CloudFlare dns. Thanks for your advice ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ninjersteve · 2023-12-09 23:21 If your concern is not using your ISPs DNS, then you need to remove that 192 address or configure your router to use your preferred DNS servers. Your router is getting your ISPs DNS servers and forwarding to those by default unless you change settings. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arroadie · 2023-12-09 23:25 Please don’t take this in a bad way: you need to learn a lot of networking concepts. (We all do, tho) Your LAN address is not your IP address provided by your ISP. LAN stands for Local Area Network. The comment above yours is pointing that you’re trying to hide your router (or whatever is there) IP address. That ip is irrelevant for all of us that aren’t connected to your local network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 23:27 So the 192 dns gets forwarded to my preferred dns? Or it is vice versa? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 23:29 I know this, but idk why i was paranoid about sharing my LAN ip. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ninjersteve · 2023-12-09 23:30 So 192 is your router and by default the router will forward to your ISP’s DNS, which I gather is not your preference. You can either change your router’s settings to tell it to forward to your preferred DNS (most but not all routers will be about to do this) or reconfigure your computer to not have the 192 address in the list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 23:34 If i configure my router to remove the 192 dns. Would this cause any problems? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- szayl · 2023-12-09 23:35 We're all here to learn or help. You weren't sure so you hid the LAN IP. No harm no foul. It's just noobish so folks are having a bit of a laugh but don't be discouraged. 🙂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- batmann88 · 2023-12-09 23:38 I am a paranoid person. So i just did hide the LAN ip which I know isn't important to hide tho. Thanks for helping bro ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i_am_blacklite · 2023-12-09 23:43 So you’ve changed your DNS settings, and then are asking why they are different? Your friend that said “IP shouldn’t act as DNS” has no idea, they are conflating two different concepts. What do you think 8.8.8.8 is? An IP address.
