I am done with Nextcloud & Owncloud hello FileBrowser. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mjh2901 · 2023-12-09 20:27 Before I get into this, I am still a fan of both NextCloud and OwnCloud, and I think OwnCloud is going somewhere cool with OCIS. I ran NextCloud for years, then about a year ago I migrated to Owncloud in an attempt to get something more stable with a smaller footprint. The one feature I always wanted was good integration with a self-hosted office-type app for editing documents much like Google Drive. Over the years I have tried everything and either failed or had no end of problems. I finally gave up and decided to stick to built-in features that did not require external VM's or systems. Looking back at my usage I have come to one conclusion... 99 percent of my usage of these apps can be performed with FileBrowser, and if I have to have it synced to my computer syncthing will be just fine. I am migrating now, and wow does this thing have a small footprint. If you are having issues or considering deploying one of the large google drive replacements, try FileBrowser first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AllTheModzAreCancer · 2023-12-09 20:40 Thanks I'll bookmark the Github and consider it when I get ready to start file hosting :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sturgeon01 · 2023-12-09 21:08 Filebrowser is great. I'm sure Nextcloud is right for some people, but to me it always felt incredibly slow and bloated. My only gripe with Filebrowser is the mobile interface. There are some strange carryovers from the desktop version, like double-clicking to open folders, that don't work well in a mobile context. Other than that it's just about perfect imo. It's got a fast, clean interface and does what it sets out to do very well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ctrl-brk · 2023-12-09 21:10 Seafile here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mjh2901 · 2023-12-09 21:15 There is a setting "use single click" just for you (and your phone) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -quakeguy- · 2023-12-09 22:02 Does FileBrowser have native integration with Windows File Explorer and MacOS Finder? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Relative-Camp-2150 · 2023-12-09 23:33 One thing I don't like with filebrowser is that when I open a video and want to press arrow to move forward 5-15s - it changes to next file (photo/video etc). Any settings for that ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-12-10 02:01 Filebrowser for life :), I love that it doesn't encrypt your files - I just want the ability to throw files onto my home server at any time and in any place. Every other solution over-engineers the shit out of the problem, like everyone is going to be having 50 users who need to be stopped from doing certain things. For my use case, filebrowser is fantastic! And if you incorperate the theme-park skins, [it's even better!](https://i.imgur.com/ClDKWQQ.png) (in my opinion) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thefpspower · 2023-12-10 03:14 Well... it's a file browser so you can share the same folder to Windows or MacOS with SMB. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- survivallama · 2023-12-10 04:42 If you are just syncing, then just use Syncthing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tomistruth · 2023-12-10 09:05 Is it still free and opensource like it used to be in the early days? Any limitations for self hosting? I would rather not use something close source with ties to China. You never know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Big-Finding2976 · 2023-12-10 09:17 Even if you only have a few users, it's important that any file- sharing services have secure authentication and the ability to control which files each user can access and what they can do with them, to prevent malware that gets on any devices on the LAN just deleting all your files. That doesn't mean that the files have to be encrypted though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-12-10 09:27 dude......who are you talking to? Are you just saying that to regurgitate "keep files safe"?? Me and everybody else knows that, who even hinted that's what anybody was talking about??? This guy....lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Big-Finding2976 · 2023-12-10 09:42 You seem very angry. I hope your theme park skinz help you calm down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-12-10 09:44 Gaslight harder brother, gaslight harder. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daYMAN007 · 2023-12-10 10:20 Why do you need that inside of filebrowser? What you need is a service which exposes a writtable webdav url which can be used inside of the os of your choice. (This is atleast what nextcloud is doing.) You could use something like easy webdav. Personally i would use rclone via ssh if you need a remote drive or SMB/NFS for a lan connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PovilasID · 2023-12-10 10:30 A good middle grounds are seafile or synthing. However I personally use SFTPgo it has bit more control web ui and you can mount to anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -quakeguy- · 2023-12-10 10:50 I’d kinda rather not expose something without MFA like SMB/NFS to public Internet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- daYMAN007 · 2023-12-10 11:54 Personally i would use rclone via sshfs if you need a remote drive SMB only for local connections ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tharunx · 2023-12-10 13:03 Man, im into a lot of years of self-hosting, hosted some advanced configs. But nextcloud AIO or original, always broke for me. Just today i was also tired of searching other alternatives and just thought of going with file browser. The one file management app that did not broke and ran exactly i want it to is file browser. Im now switching to it, but only missing feature for me would be user stroage quotas ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simplixt · 2023-12-10 13:06 The biggest limitation is the non-standard file storage format, that makes backup (e.g. via BorgBackup / Kopia) and interplay with other apps (e.g. PhotoPrism / Paperless / Immich) a real pain. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- l86rj · 2023-12-10 15:23 Your post motivated me to try it out, but I'm having a hard time understanding how the permissions work. I'm running it through docker and when I login as admin I can see the folders, but can't access them for not having permissions. Since docker runs as root, I don't understand why I have no permissions. It seems that filebrowser doesn't try to access the files as root, it must have its own inner user on its image system. What did you have to do to read and edit files that already existed in your system? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- boobs1987 · 2023-12-10 16:03 I like Filebrowser on desktop, but I agree on mobile it's not that great. I recently switched to FileStash, so far I'm enjoying the super stripped down interface. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zealousideal_Oil2918 · 2023-12-10 19:33 Any suggestions for that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smcclos · 2023-12-11 11:40 I have a similar issue. At first was using Microsoft OneDrive, and was concerned about my data being up there on the cloud. Dabbled with Nextcloud but never really fully committed to it. Then worked with syncthing, and was planning to pull everything that way, and decided was too much data and ultimately went with syncthing/OneDrive hybrid solution where sensitive data goes in Syncthing and Normal data goes in OneDrive. My use case is for just myself and multiple computers, so know won't work for everyone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thebobrooney · 2023-12-12 23:23 iOS app 10€?!? No thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mjh2901 · 2023-12-12 23:41 Whatever you are looking at is not associated with the FileBrowser project. There is a lot of IOS stuff named filebrowser they do not work with the filebrowser listed here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thebobrooney · 2023-12-12 23:46 Can you point me to the right one? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mjh2901 · 2023-12-12 23:48 Honestly I cant find one. Filebrowser is fast and simple so you can use it in the browser on your phone, you can just make the link an app button and go from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trustworthy_Fartzzz · 2023-12-13 14:35 I went with File Browser on top of Syncthing (which doesn’t offer file browsing functionality). Seafile was out because it doesn’t store files on the FS itself. My plan is to also bind mount Immich photo directories into my NAS homes mount which has an instance of File Browser running as the user. I do this with the Syncthing Sync folder too. This way my household users have a single $HOME on the NAS where Syncthing and Immich store files to with File Browser on top for browsing and basic viewing needs.
