Should this setup work? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pazn737 · 2023-12-09 11:23 Hi guys, if i could borrow someones time I have Rev proxy on server 1 running perfectly fine, server 1 has esx-i and 3 VMs each with docker + ubuntu, nginx and separate domains pointing to each and all is well I have now introduced server 2 to my stack, and installed nginx, but when i tried setting the new ip in nginx reverse proxy on server 1 it doesnt seem to connect the domain to server 2 despite the local ip for server 2 displaying correctly Hopefully i've explained this well enough? Also to keep in mind on server 2 I have only installed ubuntu and nginx no docker or anything ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isleepbad · 2023-12-09 12:29 So if I understand this correctly, you want to put server 2 behind your reverse proxy that lives in server 1? The first obvious question is can you ping server 2 from server 1? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pazn737 · 2023-12-09 12:41 Yep to both ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isleepbad · 2023-12-09 15:08 The easiest way in my opinion is to have server 2 expose its own services via the reverse proxy. And then have server 1's reverse proxy point to server 2's reverse proxy rather than the IP directly. For example: Server 2: you have a second homepage service called homepage2. In reverse proxy 2, point to it using something like homepage2.home.lan locally. Server 1: point to homepage2's service by pointing homepage2.mydomain.com (on server 1) to homepage2.home.lan (which exists on server 2). That way you can keep your services local to their respective servers and only expose what you really want to use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-12-09 15:58 Can you reach the service on server2 via the local ip? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pazn737 · 2023-12-09 23:53 Legend, thanks for the writeup, will try this :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pazn737 · 2023-12-09 23:54 yeah it has the nginx welcome screen on local ip but not on domain :l ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-12-10 00:52 can you reach it with curl on the serv1 and the NPM container ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pazn737 · 2023-12-10 02:16 did not try but i set up nginx rev prox on serv2 and updated the port on serv1 and that is working now, so im going to just bounce off the back of that and I think that should be fine?
