How have Ryzen AM4/AM5 ECC deployments been performing for you guys? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anic135 · 2023-12-09 01:32 Hey folks, so ive been researching options for getting a entry-level workstation/server build setup for my brother. My main role in helping out is to wear the hats of Sys-Admin and Data Engineer to automate and organize his communication + some order processing, set up some financial dashboarding, and finally document + train him to navigate and manage this stuff the best he can. However of course, before I can do all of that we need to overhaul his computing environment and I know personality-wise he's going to want to do all of his existing work with his new software deployment in one virtual space, simplicity + ease of use comes with its costs. After combing through all the database performance + general compute- driven benchmarks for in-use CPUs, zooming in on what cloud providers (the big 3 and smaller) are charging for old and new Xeon/EPYC/Ryzen configs, combined with his need for a discrete GPU for his work in CAD-file based 3D design software, ive found the that the price to performance ratio gap is just so huge when comparing the R5-7600 server build I have parted out with current cloud rental pricing. I still plan on presenting cloud options that are a close fit to his needs as I know the peace of mind that "Five Nines" reliability carries is worth a lot on its own, but this AI boom has just pushed monthly GPU rental pricing way out of sensibility range for the small fish when you can pick up an acceptable unit in the \~$200 price class. The breakeven timeline for my current theorized system is in the 6-14 month ballpark. With all of that said, how stable has been AM4/AM5 with ECC UDIMMs? Anything out of the ordinary when setting up RAID? Or just general atypical quirks? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-09 01:46 /r/Homelab /r/HomeServer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-09 20:13 ## Post Removed Hey, Anic135!
