Team Viewer Alternative? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- threehappypenguins · 2023-12-09 01:22 For the last several months, I have been getting notifications from Team Viewer claiming "commercial use," when I am definitely not. Then today, they cut me off after a minute of use, rendering TV useless. I'm looking for something to use where I have a server I can install on a Linux cloud compute of some kind, and has Windows and Android clients. I used Team Viewer to access friends and family's computers to help them with stuff, sometimes from my computer, and sometimes from my (Android) phone. I need a server so it can run like Team Viewer and not need VPN. And it needs to be secure (such has MFA). It also needs to be able to "see" Windows UAC. I'm a little overwhelmed with the stuff out there, and they seemingly don't do what I need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fire84 · 2023-12-09 01:39 [Anydesk](https://anydesk.com/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-09 01:46 Gets asked atleast once a month... https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=teamviewer&restrict_sr=on &include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-12-09 01:53 [Literally asked only yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/c omments/18dalh0/best_replacement_for_teamviewer/), should have been a top post when you visited the sub, lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- threehappypenguins · 2023-12-09 01:58 Yeah, I went through it already, but I am confused by the options. Like with Rustdesk, I thought that I had to build my own Windows and Android clients, but after I posted here, I found that I can install a binary from the release section on Github. However, I am now trying to find a tutorial on how to install Rustdesk on a linux cloud compute for a server. And do you know if after I'm done all that, will each person be able to sign up for their own secure account, like Team Viewer? I don't know how all of it works with credentials and whatnot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-12-09 02:20 Sorry, no idea. I'm a MeshCentral dude myself. Now, if you found yourself using **that** then: * You don't need to build your own agents (technically MC server does it for you with your own names, branding etc). * You don't need to build any clients as the end-user signup/remote control is just through browser sessions. So no exes/bins/whatever needed. * Installs just fine on cloud service either baremetal (uses node) or Docker. I run my server on Oracle ARM just fine. * Users sign up via the browser. Can run multiple sites with distinct users per site etc. (called 'domains' in mc parlance). Addtionally, not that you've raised the issue, but all traffic is pure web traffic (https:, ws:) so fully proxiable via your own proxy or cdns such as cloudflare. Possible downside is it is ugly as fuck. Think there's other themse been knocked for it but the default is actually super usable so I just look past the 90s aesthetic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- threehappypenguins · 2023-12-09 04:35 Haha I saw some of the pics and it's super hideous-looking. What about the Android app? Does the Android app allow me to control another PC from my phone? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-12-09 04:53 Android app is effectively an agent (even then it's view-only iirc). If you wanted to control a device from your phone you'd just use your web browser same as from any other device. The beauty of MC is that you just need to have access to a browser to control any of the attached devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- viondkumar2299 · 2023-12-09 05:07 Have a look at RemotePC, its a stable application across all platforms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Regular-8009 · 2023-12-09 10:11 Worth mentioning if you'd rather stick with teamviewer, you can claim personal use here: https://www.teamviewer.com/en/reset-management/ They're pretty good about it, i had mine reset within 24 hours. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-12-09 12:28 [did you read the readme, faq, install guides, and watch all the videos that are available](https://github.com/rustdesk/rustdesk/wiki/FAQ) ??? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- durty_nutrag · 2023-12-09 13:42 Whatever you do, please [stay away from RustDesk.](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/s/dgENy51qgK) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- threehappypenguins · 2023-12-09 14:01 I read through all that, and apparently one of the servers is in Seoul, not China. But does it matter? I'm taking care of the hosting. The only thing that might pass as shady is how they handled Wayland. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- durty_nutrag · 2023-12-09 14:26 I guess I should rephrase. Depending on what you look for in open- source, self-hosted software, there are better options. Some people wouldn't touch anything with ties to China. Also in some of the comments of that post, some people had their issue requests deleted on github. Nevertheless, they are still a better than TeamViewer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- threehappypenguins · 2023-12-09 18:05 Another question about MC, and I can't find clear answers. I am trying to install it on a VPC, but I keep getting that my site is unreachable. So before I keep spending a huge amount of time getting it working to try it out, does MC allow another user to message me, just like Team Viewer does? There is one situation where I need this, and I installed Rustdesk, and though the install was crazy easy, chat doesn't work unless you remote in and I can't create users unless I pay. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- digitalindependent · 2023-12-09 19:34 Awesome Open Source on YouTube compared all options a while ago. I went with mesh central, because it’s all in a browser tab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-12-09 19:55 The agent (which just runs as a service) doesn't allow messaging, but the Mesh Central Assistant does. The latter is a tool user can invoke to request support, as opposed to having a agent service that's always connected to the server. A device can use either one or both without conflict. /r/meshcentral exists if your don't want to wait for me to see your queries btw.
