So I deployed Whoogle on my NAS.... reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-08 22:53 Which is nice. And finally got it to launch and be the default when using the searchbar in FireFox. But by GOD do they NOT want you to be able to easily add you own search engine. You need to go into the about:config settings, find an obscurely named property and set it to "true" to enable the add button in the search section of the FireFox settings. If not, that button is greyed out (!) Judging by all the search hits on this particular issue. I am not alone in this. I now feel very strange, using a search that feels like Google actually did on day one. Which is now a very long time ago! (God I feel old) It's shocking this is even allowed. But not suprising considering how they make their money. If you can. just deploy it. Trust me. Are there any benefits? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-08 23:08 It’s in the first paragraph of the link? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siranysparechange · 2023-12-08 23:12 Is this a joke? In Firefox you just navigate to the URL of your whoogle instance, right click on the address bar and click the button to add 'Whoogle Search'. Finally set it as your default search engine in settings>search ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-08 23:19 I did not have that option. Only a list of predefined search engines. And as I said, the add button was also greyed out in the settings. I have no idea why. Maybe we have different editions of FireFox? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorruptedReddit · 2023-12-08 23:22 Whoogle was good but I ended up going with SearXNG https://github.com/searxng/searxng ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siranysparechange · 2023-12-08 23:28 Perhaps you aren't using https ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-08 23:32 I might try that as well. I guess the results are more diverse? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorruptedReddit · 2023-12-09 00:02 Results from what I've seen are mostly the same. However, one of the biggest benefits of using whoogle or SearXNG is for the privacy while still getting to use a search engine such as Google. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorruptedReddit · 2023-12-09 00:03 Yes, it's very diverse. I believe (if memory serves correctly in my old age) I ran into a captcha problem with whoogle. Again, this could be completely wrong and I could be remembering wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CorruptedReddit · 2023-12-09 00:05 From the Whoogle git Get Google search results, but without any ads, JavaScript, AMP links, cookies, or IP address tracking. Easily deployable in one click as a Docker app, and customizable with a single config file. Quick and simple to implement as a primary search engine replacement on both desktop and mobile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notta_Lamed_Wufnik · 2023-12-09 00:16 I came to say this. Been a Whoogle user and fan for awhile and love it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-12-09 00:17 Whoogle was one of the most basic and easy to setup docker apps i could possibly imagine, I'm unsure of how you had trouble with this one. You literally just have to fire it up, and browse to the correct ip:port in a browser. Great service tho! I love that there's a focus on projects like this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nefarious_bumpps · 2023-12-09 00:19 You have to add Whoogle as a search provider first, either by doing so as u/siranysparechange explains, or by manually setting-up via about:config. This is intentional by design to make it more difficult for bad actors to hijack your search provider without your knowledge and action. Firefox supports a number of the leading search providers natively, and many more, including whoogle, can be enabled via extensions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notdoreen · 2023-12-09 01:16 Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 01:48 I didn’t have problems with Whoogle or the install. I had to jump through hoops to add it as a search engine to Firefox though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-12-09 01:57 Super weird, using the default yaml settings (used the docker-compose method) as soon as the whoogle site fired up, right clicking the address bar streight up worked to add whoogle to search, then 2 seconds later i set it to my default in firefox settings. Then I added it as a subdomain via a quick proxy-conf in nginx, and i was all done. https://nintenuendo.tv/ down at the bottom ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HTTP_404_NotFound · 2023-12-09 02:01 > But by GOD do they NOT want you to be able to easily add you own search engine. Its, quite easy. I have used the ability to add custom-search providers for years... Just- instead of pointing to Splunk/Service- Now, just add the URL for whichever provider you want. https://static.xtremeownage.com/blog/2020/searching-splunk-from- browser-bar/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 02:03 It might have something to do with me not having https configured on my network, but I didn’t have that option and I had to enable the add button in the settings as I described. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-12-09 02:05 i'm not using https either, streight http on my local lan (where i tested it), then i put it behind my domain which has it's own SSL, and this subdomain is set to use aswell ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cd109876 · 2023-12-09 02:39 right click URL bar > add, then g; to the search engine list in settings, its added to the list and you can set it as default. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- malastare- · 2023-12-09 02:48 There's a good reason to not make it trivial to add different search engines. It's a very high risk target for malicious attacks, allowing very difficult-to-spot MITM injections that would can make it easy to set up phishing or masquerading attacks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fredflintstone88 · 2023-12-09 03:55 I couldn't get the duckduckgo api error to go away with searxng. Is there a workaround for that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- travprev · 2023-12-09 04:45 I understand deploying it on your NAS For use from inside your home network, but barring a persistent VPN connection how do you use it from outside your home network? What about installing it localhost on your laptop and have it independent of any network that you are connected to? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheBoatyMcBoatFace · 2023-12-09 05:09 Kagle for the win. Best $10/month I’ve ever spent ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zentrosis · 2023-12-09 05:12 So ignoring the search issue... I'm trying to understand how on earth whoogle works... How does it know the websites that exist in the world? When you host it are you also web crawling to build indexes of the entire internet so that you can search it? It just doesn't seem like the kind of thing you could realistically self-host without a lot of resources. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- echae · 2023-12-09 05:19 It’s a custom frontend to Google’s search results ---------------------------------------------------------------------- echae · 2023-12-09 05:20 What’s Kagle? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheBoatyMcBoatFace · 2023-12-09 05:24 Sorry, Kagi https://kagi.com/ It’s a search engine, but paid. It can increase your privacy if you're using a VPS that isn't obviously linked to you, or if you have multiple users then Google is not able to easily tell them apart. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cyanide · 2023-12-09 06:37 You need to update your instance, perhaps? I had that issue too. Updated and it went away. Just ended up running Watchtower to handle automatic updates for SearxNG and a couple of other containers after that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- atika · 2023-12-09 06:47 I'm having flashbacks of Metacrawler from the nineties 😀 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- itsaride · 2023-12-09 07:37 > find an obscurely named property and set it to "true" Oh the humanity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zentrosis · 2023-12-09 07:56 Okay, that makes sense ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codenamek83 · 2023-12-09 08:08 Hey u/Nintenuendo_, is the landing page your own custom application? It looks cool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DiabeticJedi · 2023-12-09 09:15 Resource wise how is it? I want to try deploying it myself but I'm debating about if I run it on the Raspberry Pi that is running Pi-Hole or if I should run it in docker on my Unraid server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JustFinishedBSG · 2023-12-09 10:52 Yes Kagi is one of those “i can’t believe i’m paying for this” service but it’s so so so worth it. I’ve tried basically all the other “google alternatives” and it’s imo the only competitive one. It’s actually better than google. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 11:24 Good to get a resonable explanation. Instead of ”It’s suuuuuper simple, are you an idiot?”. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fredflintstone88 · 2023-12-09 11:27 Let me try this and I will report back ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 11:30 I don’t (yet) have my network open to the internet but there is a pretty long list of publicly available deployments on the github. But I now understand that most people here are just too lazy to ever click the links that you provide :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 11:38 It feels like there should be hundreds of these. Is it really worth it because $10 a month for unlimited search is about three times the price of my VPN. And why did you choose this one specifically? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 11:46 Yeah, it is a problem when a search does not even lead you to any official documentation , but to a a comment on a reddit post (of course). It might be there but was not easy to find. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- purepersistence · 2023-12-09 12:46 From a privacy point of view, if I deploy Whoogle in my home lab does that do anything for me? My public IP would still be the same address. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Reziem · 2023-12-09 14:04 Your site is pretty cool. I’ve been wanting to set up something like that for friends and family. A nice page / place for all the stuff I selfhost to live. What are you using to achieve this? / and what are you using for the authentication? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 15:37 If you don’t want to expose your IP at all you have to use a VPN or deploy it on a VPS maybe? I do not want to run this for privacy primarily but for quicker results and a much cleaner results page. The actual search results is still Google. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- purepersistence · 2023-12-09 15:38 I’m setting it up thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-09 15:40 Nothing of that is obvious, which was my point.
