4k in Plex vs Jellyfin reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-08 18:15 So I recently picked myself up a 4k disc reader for Christmas. I ripped copies of my 4k Mario and the Standard Blu-ray as well with MakeMKV. I then used handbrake to convert them to .m4v files. Plex seems to work fine, both versions play great and play natively so don't have to worry about transcoding. However in Jellyfin, the 4k file looks washed out, and requires transcoding because "the video's range type is not supported". What is going on here? I took the screenshot on my 1440p monitor, but I get the same on my LG OLED 4k tv. Any help would be appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-08 18:20 https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/14c2bfg/rjellyfin_is_now_cl osed_please_visit_us_at_our/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-08 18:54 If it works on Plex, keep using Plex. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-08 18:57 Just checked on Plex again, also washed out on the TV Plex app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrBaxterBlack · 2023-12-08 19:02 I fail to see how this is relevant to the question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrBaxterBlack · 2023-12-08 19:04 What this truly sounds like is the tone mapping isn't mapping correctly. I don't rip discs personally but this has been the case when movies or episodes look washed out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-08 19:08 OP is having issues and questiond about Jellyfin playback. You dont think the Jellyfin forum is a good place for that? Why not? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-08 19:08 Yeah I tried the Xbox Plex app and it had a prompt about colors will look distorted because it contains HDR content. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrBaxterBlack · 2023-12-08 19:14 Not in the way you presented it. Considering your link is to a "now closed" sub instead of the forum they direct you to. Then you provided only the link itself without any context. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-08 19:23 I am sorry that "/r/jellyfin is now closed. Please visit us at our new forums." does not live up to your high standards. OP can simply visit the link, understand that their sub is closed and see the link and info about their new forum. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-08 19:24 I'll check it out. Looks like this is a 4k HDR problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-08 19:25 Yeah looks like this is an HDR problem. Does 264 code support 4k HDR? Or does it need to be done with 265? I'll look around and post if I find a solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-08 19:28 Since you now mention it happens on Plex too, the issue is of course not limited to or caused by Jellyfin. You might need to make changes to the way you are ripping and encoding your content. Both the Jellyfin forum and the /r/Plex sub can be a start for such topics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redlellowletter · 2023-12-08 20:45 My understanding is that HDR is supported in h264 10-bit, but few consumer devices support hardware decoding that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-08 23:01 I guess as a follow-up, what is the audio I should always make sure is there? Unless I just use the raw mkv file. Though I would prefer some level of processing to reduce space eventually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-08 23:02 Okay, tried h265, seems to work fine currently. I'll have to run a few more tests. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Practical_Driver_924 · 2023-12-09 11:50 Which 4k reader if i may ask? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-09 16:26 Pioneer BDR-212V ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Terrible_Ad_4678 · 2023-12-09 17:54 Okay H265 is needed for HDR content. I think non-hdr 4k could be done with H264. As a side note I'm trying to figure out the most robust audio setup as well. Does anyone know what happens when you are using 7.1 and don't have 7 channels? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chris198810 · 2023-12-11 08:35 To convert Blu-ray, after trying to use MakeMKV, Handbrake and numerous other programs, DumboFab Blu-ray Ripper is the one that actually worked. With a user friendly UI and lots of options in the menus this is by far the best Blu-ray ripper of them all... It helps you convert Blu-ray to MP4 without any issues. Then it can be played in Plex & Jellyfin easily.
