MedusaJS: What we shipped in the past 12 weeks to our open-source commerce toolbox reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amoopa · 2023-12-08 14:09 Hello, I'm Nick, co-founder of [Medusa](https://github.com/medusajs/medusa). In keeping with our tradition, we are excited to share our progress on our open-source commerce SDK with this wonderful community. We eagerly want your feedback! We built Medusa to give developers the best foundation for building custom digital commerce applications. We do this by providing the backend primitives needed in modern commerce setups (e.g. cart, customer, channel, order logic) along with the tools to help orchestrate and customize these. Below is an overview of what we shipped with Recap 3 over the past 12 weeks. \--- **Workflows SDK:** A new primitive in our toolbox, making it simple to build custom commerce flows involving multiple systems. Workflows orchestrate actions across your stack with built-in retries and rollbacks. Check out our [Workflow animation](https://medusajs.com/recap/#workflows) or [read the announcement](https://medusajs.com/blog/announcing-medusa-workflows- sdk/). \--- **API Routes, Subscribers, and Scheduled Jobs:** Extending Medusa with custom functionality has been made simpler with three major DX improvements: • API Routes: Add custom endpoints for bespoke logic or webhooks ([announcement](https://medusajs.com/blog/announcing-api-routes/)) • Subscribers: React to events from across your commerce stack ([announcement](https://medusajs.com/blog/announcing-improved- subscriber-api/)) • Scheduled Jobs: Run logic to complete planned tasks ([announcement](https://medusajs.com/blog/announcing-scheduled-jobs- api/)) \--- **Pricing module:** Our new [Pricing Module](http://medusajs.com/pricing-module/) offers granular pricing control and configuration. Similar to our [Product](https://medusajs.com/product-module/) and [Inventory](https://medusajs.com/inventory-module/) modules, the Pricing module can run standalone in any Node project or combination with other Medusa modules. \--- **Next.js Storefront Starter:** Our Storefront Starter got a major update just before the Recap. The Starter now supports Next.js 14, enhanced product search, Medusa's latest features and modules, and got a redesign using our new UI components. [Visit it here](https://medusajs.com/nextjs-commerce/). \--- **Ecommerce recipes:** You can build various digital commerce applications with Medusa - Ecommerce, marketplaces, B2B commerce, PoS systems, B2B shops, subscriptions, and much more. Our new Recipes give you a starting point for each of these. [Read our Recipes](http://docs.medusajs.com/recipes). \--- **More custom Admin:** Our Admin dashboard is more customizable than ever with: • Widgets & UI Routes: Customize existing pages through Widgets or create completely new Admin pages using UI Routes ([docs](http://docs.medusajs.com/admin/widgets)) • Multi-language support: Translate the Admin into your preferred language with 15 translations already available ([announcement](https://medusajs.com/blog/announcing-multi-language- support/)) • Medusa UI: Build Admin Extensions with the same look and feel as the Medusa Admin using our new component library ([docs](http://docs.medusajs.com/ui)) \--- **And a lot more:** We continuously improve. Here are some of all the other things that came out: • Auth methods: [New authentication methods](https://medusajs.com/blog/new-authentication-methods/) and stronger security foundation. • Bulk Editor: A spreadsheet-like UX for creating and editing prices. • Price Lists: [Differentiate prices](https://medusajs.com/pricing- module/#overview) based customer groups, channels, and more. • Import/Export: Load data into Medusa faster and use custom parsing strategies. • API Reference Docs: [Revamped design](https://docs.medusajs.com/api/) and more performant than ever. \--- If you want to know more about our future direction, check out our article [Toward Medusa 2.0](https://medusajs.com/blog/toward- medusa-2/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siszero · 2023-12-08 14:53 Are there out-of-the-box UI projects we could use with this to get started? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amoopa · 2023-12-08 14:56 Yes, check out this one: [https://next.medusajs.com/](https://next.medusajs.com/) \- all source code for it is open sourced ---------------------------------------------------------------------- devtotheops09 · 2023-12-08 23:20 This is very interesting. Cool! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zn448sk39 · 2023-12-10 13:35 Medusa seems like such a nice project, I'm sad I haven't had the need for it yet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MarteeArtee · 2023-12-17 23:18 In general, will Medusa 2.0 have many breaking changes from 1.x, or will it be largely backwards compatible? I plan on using Medusa as the PIM, E-commerce, and POS backing for a small business, but don't know if now is the best time to get started on what will eventually be a sizeable app (for one developer at least), or if I should wait a few months to start fresh with 2.0. As a side, I've been following development updates for a few months now and love all of the new features being added, as well as the direction you're going with the standalone modules. In addition to my question about backwards compatibility, am I right in interpreting that the new modules will let one use Medusa as a serverless app? I'm wondering if, using the new modules, I'll be able to get away with foregoing hosting a backend and just be able to use something like Supabase and a serverless version of the Admin which I could host on Vercel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amoopa · 2023-12-19 21:10 Thanks for the kind words and good questions. **On compatibility:** Nothing should stop you from getting on board with Medusa already. Our default API will have minimal breaking changes, and we are committed to making the upgrade path for existing Medusa projects smooth and painless with 2.0. **On Modules:** It is true that we continue towards modularizing a larger part of our core modules such as cart, discounts, orders etc. These will indeed be optimized for serverless environments. It is a bit too early to tell exactly how much logic we'll be able to modularize short-term, but we focus on the module areas that are usually replaced with other systems or close to the customer experience.
