Help with reverse proxy and Jellyfin reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazy_zz · 2023-12-08 12:24 Good day r/selfhosted , I just wanted to thank you guys for putting me on this amazing journey of selfhosting. I have been lurking on this sub for quite some time now. I have learned so much from basically using google+reddit and reading all the comments here. Bit of background, I’m a complete noob when it comes to this stuff. I have no technical background or any experience with any of this. I started this journey with looking up a way to play my own Media with plex and buying a synology, raspberry pi for my automation apps and so on. I recently found myself with a lot of time and decided to learn how to safely expose a selfhosted service to internet as I needed overseerr accessible for my wife as we are long distance right now. VPN seemed too much of a hassle for me to convince her to set up. So this is where some of my issues began, I learned how to use nginx to work as a reverse proxy watching videos on YouTube. Following this guide I forwarded my dns to cloudflare> proxied to my home ip> open ports 443 and 80 facing to nginx and then to my overseer. This worked great. Website was published with an ssl and all was done via the admin interface of nginx. So as I was worried about safety I added access controls to be safe i.e require emails for otp and have couple others for peace of mind (in cloudflare) Now to our actual problem I’m facing is I proxied a subdomain to my nas’s ip and port that is hosting jellyfin. Now I’m able to login using this subdomain on a website quite easily well not really but have to add an account and so on. But what I’m not able to do is use this for any of jelly apps with using this subdomain. Only time this works properly is with using a browser. So what I need help with is how to set this up so I don’t have to port forward jellyfin directly. I did try to read through documentation provided on jellyfin wiki but all of that requires messing around with config files. I am not very familiar with config files and don’t want to break overseerr that is already working well. Some more info, nginx is hosted on my raspberry pi 4 using docker, I have ufw set up on my pi and have exposed all the ports needed for my self hosted applications. My jellyfin is hosted on a docker on my synology NAS as I wanted some of transcoding and my media with plex is already on this so it was much easier. Nginx proxy is properly facing my jellyfin instance and works well on browsers. Any guidance in this would be appreciated. I do want to say that any advice would be needed to be dumbed down if possible because I really don’t want to break one part of this setup.
