What are your thoughts/advice on a completely on-premise communication system? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrattyDeal · 2023-12-08 10:36 Hey Reddit fam! Given the increasing concerns around data security, especially with technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs), I'm thinking of crafting a chat system that's both secure and on-premises. Where you retain complete ownership and control of your company data. Our solution offers customizable risk management capabilities tailored to meet your organization's specific needs.Considering this subreddit's expertise, I am intrigued to know that is it aligned with your needs and preferences? Interested to know your thoughts on it. Looking forward to your thoughts to validate the idea! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrattyDeal · 2023-12-08 10:37 In no way am I advertising a product. I am simply seeking your kind feedback. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InvaderToast348 · 2023-12-08 12:50 During a small testing phase a while ago, a combination of nextcloud talk and IRC with a web client worked fine for my small group (4 people). That was a while ago though, and it would be interesting to see new competitors in the FOSS selfhosted communication space. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TallFescue · 2023-12-08 18:13 You could use delta chat https://delta.chat/en/ and a totally LAN only email server. Or XMPP or IRC. I have Synology, so my mind also goes to the Synology Chat app ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-08 19:09 Matrix/Synapse. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-08 21:35 Be aware that push notifications almost always require sending notifications through a centralised server controlled by a third party (Apple, Google Microsoft, or Mozilla). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrattyDeal · 2023-12-11 05:21 >https://delta.chat/en/ Thanks for your Feedback! could you provide me with more information on this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrattyDeal · 2023-12-11 05:22 Thanks for your Feedback! could you provide me with more information on this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InvaderToast348 · 2023-12-11 17:23 Sure, what would you like to know? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BrattyDeal · 2023-12-12 06:36 I would like to know about your experience with nextcloud talk + IRC, Do you feel that there was something that you wish they provided you that is in line with their way of operation? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InvaderToast348 · 2023-12-12 09:31 From memory, everything worked fine. Nextcloud in general is quite slow just because it has such a large feature set, but the talk service itself was great, comparable or better than a WhatsApp video call. Bearing in mind though, I only tested it when we were all on LAN, so the bottleneck would have probably been my PC's processor. If we were all spread out outside using data, I imagine that the bottleneck would be the ISP connection to my PC (assuming that all of the video/audio passes through the server and then redirected to the rest of the clients). Since I am now, from today, off for Christmas I have a lot of free time and not much to do, so i will try and find / recreate the docker compose and get it all running again. I need to get nextcloud (or an alternative) running again, so I'll also spin up Talk and IRC (which from memory is inspird and thelounge) I am not sure exactly what your question means, so if I missed anything or you would like a specific detail please let me know, I'm happy to share. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InvaderToast348 · 2023-12-15 11:51 Unless you run something like ntfy. The device notifications are optional, but you can still see them all in the app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-15 21:42 Yep! So long as you are using Universal Push compatible apps. And sadly, it only works on Android.
