anybody have a good solution for GPS tracking reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yak54RC · 2023-12-08 00:54 im trying to run a frematics one plus GPs tracker with the code from github but once the tracker loses cell connection once it doesnt want to update and gets stuck on same location. im running it on a demo traccar server until i can finalize it but have had nothing but issues with the hardware ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StrykerSigma · 2023-12-08 02:19 Traccar is what I use for years now. What kind of hardware problems you have? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yak54RC · 2023-12-08 02:41 i have a frematrics one plus obd2 unit and i installed the latest v5 software. it works great when i test it at home and when i first plug it in in the morning . i have it on a work truck and like 30 minutes into the drive it just stops updating info. traccar and hologram sim says its still avtive yet the location data never updates. its happen twice already. from some stuff i have read it seems like when it loses cell location and then regains it , it keeps sending previous location indefinitely. i saw someone on github talking about this issue and supposedly had a fix but i dont know how to implement that fix into frematics software. [https://gist.github.com/soshial/d07919e0fac67f5501a38fe3c39be416](htt ps://gist.github.com/soshial/d07919e0fac67f5501a38fe3c39be416) \#4 on this list is what the problem i think im having and it seems they ficed it here but i dont think this is the software that i have yet i dont know how to mkae this work on my board ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StrykerSigma · 2023-12-08 03:15 I'm using the MP90 4G and ThingsMobile IoT sim service. It works without any issues, and for the past 4 years, I barely used $20 for two cars. I chose the MP90 because it was well documented, and support is very helpful. For the Frematrics, you may want to lower the update frequency to once every 30 seconds when the car is in motion. https://www.mictrack.com/product/4g-obd-tracker/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yak54RC · 2023-12-08 03:30 where do you buy this tracker ive seen a lot about mictrack. im in the us BTW ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StrykerSigma · 2023-12-08 03:37 I'm also in the US. I bought the mictrack directly from the manufacturer's website. It cost $69 per OBD2 for a total of $138+$45 shipping. I had to get the 4g because the 2g was getting turned off, and the 3G was going to follow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MalcolmY · 2023-12-11 12:42 Just this week I hooked up a Sinotrack ST-906L to the car and used on own Traccar server. Works great. The only hiccup I had was because I'm noob-ish, and didn't know how to create a database for the server. The default database within the Traccar docker image is erased after each restart, so you have to provide a database for it to use. I found connecting Traccar to PostgreSQL easier than Mysql. I don't like the developer's attitude in the forums, but I love the product. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zealousideal_Sea_848 · 2023-12-11 17:14 Where did you buy your tracker. The issue I had was with the freematics tracker not so much Traccar. Freematics has this issue that the update frequency was set at one second and if you lose cell signal during an location update it goes into a loop where it just keeps sending the same location it last had. I have as able to increase the internal to 5 seconds which improved but it still ended up freezing in a location with bad cell signal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MalcolmY · 2023-12-12 02:59 From Aliexpress, and I think you can find it on Amazon. Search for "Sinotrack ST-906L". There are a few models some with larger batteries and some with smaller form factor. I never lost a signal this week, however this device seems to be very reliable. And it's cheap. Changing servers is very easy and quick with one SMS message. If your server goes down for any reason you can quickly switch to their free service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zealousideal_Sea_848 · 2023-12-15 01:47 Sorry to bother but what sim service are you using. I’m using hologram which doesn’t come with a phone number I have to pay $1 month extra for that. I tried their online sms but was not getting replies back from the sinotrack device ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MalcolmY · 2023-12-15 16:48 I use a regular sim card froim one of the mobile carriers in my country. I subscribed to 200 MB a month with a number of minutes and SMS messages. You need SMS because it answers commands with ` SET OK` telling you your command was accepted. You can leave it alone after that. Minutes are useful for the alarm/SOS/microphone monitor features because the device will call a control number you set (a regular phone call). But it's not needed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zealousideal_Sea_848 · 2023-12-15 18:07 Yeah that’s what I figured. Thank you I’ll get the phone number to set it up correctly ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yak54RC · 2023-12-16 22:26 thanks for the recommendation . this is the type of tracker i was looking for. how do you set it to go sleep after no movement? i see it still using data hours after vehicle stopped ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MalcolmY · 2023-12-17 09:33 There's a command for that: ``` sleep+password space "time in minutes" e.g. sleep0000 12 Device will sleep after ignition off for 12 minutes ``` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yak54RC · 2023-12-22 21:57 my first st-906 had issues which could have been me messing with it too much. i got a second one and its working flawlessly. where are you running your traccar server. i have unraid and im already running a maridb database server for other dockers. not sure if you know how to attach the traccar server to use the mariadb server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MalcolmY · 2023-12-22 23:16 I have an Ubuntu server at home running Traccar in a docker container. It took me a day but I figured out the DB thing. Here's the relevant DB entries in `traccar.xml`: org.postgresql.Driver jdbc:postgresql://192.168.1.10:5432/traccar postgres 111111 And here's the the compose file for the DB: version: '3.1' services: db: image: postgres:16.1-alpine3.19 restart: always environment: POSTGRES_PASSWORD: 111111 adminer: image: adminer restart: always ports: - 4789:8080 You don't need the second service `adminer` but it's a nice to have GUI for noobs like me to work with the DB. The docker compose for Traccar itself is standard, like this: version: "3" services: app: image: traccar/traccar:latest container_name: traccar hostname: traccar restart: unless-stopped ports: - "8093:8082" - "5013:5013" - "5013:5013/udp" volumes: - /home/server/traccar/logs:/opt/traccar/logs:rw - /home/server/traccar/traccar.xml:/opt/traccar/conf/traccar.xml:ro - /home/server/traccar/data:/opt/traccar/data I remember trying to get Mysql to work with Traccar but it was too difficult for me. After hours of trying I tested Postgres and it worked instantly, so I stuck with it. Traccar's documentation mentions 3 types of databases none of which are MariaDB. https://www.traccar.org/documentation/ However you can ask in the forums, the dev answers there frequently. At the end of the day you must connect Traccar to a DB because otherwise the data is wiped after every restart with the embedded DB in the docker image.
