Bookmark manager with a focus on organization? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PerkySloth · 2023-12-07 22:13 I've been looking at the surprising ton of self-hosted bookmark managers out there for hours and I somehow can't really seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. I've been using nextcloud bookmarks but like most of the things it does, it's adequate but not really good because it always lacks customization options in my opinion. Updating the bookmark list for a few new bookmarks is a pain if you use local bookmarks and want to sync there(which I'm looking to get away from doing) and adding the new ones there directly is extremely tedious if you want to have a title for it that's not the link itself and you can't see both the title and link at the same time looking at the list and a few other issues of that kind. So I'm trying to find something that has tags(easy, most of them have that) but also, more importantly, a good customizable way to manually add and organize the bookmarks as well(like with the classic nested folders list most browser use for bookmarks for example) and ideally has a compact view option since I don't want to infinitely scroll down to find something which would defeat the purpose of the manual organization since that makes it quicker than having to type/find a tag when you know exactly what you're looking for. I don't want something that syncs bookmarks to the browser since I can't find a browser I'm happy with(if only firefox never changed their addon system :( ) so I keep trying weird ones and the chance they'll all have an addon for it would be slim to none. So far my best option seem to be [https://github.com/kanishka- linux/reminiscence](https://github.com/kanishka- linux/reminiscence)(which I haven't seen in any list of these type of apps for some reason) but that received no updates in 5 years(the dev apparently has no free time to work on it in the foreseeable future) and it has a few active bugs so if I can find something more stable, it would be ideal. Other features like multi-user and archival of pages would be nice but not a requirement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FL-MTL-ED · 2023-12-07 22:23 I dont know of one that has a directory structure like you are asking for, but i will throw the 2 that i currently use into the ring, because they both have tagging and powerful search functions which for me can replace the need for directories. [https://github.com/ArchiveBox/ArchiveBox](https://github.com/ArchiveB ox/ArchiveBox) [https://github.com/go-shiori/shiori](https://github.com/go- shiori/shiori) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sean_999 · 2023-12-07 22:34 Love Shiori! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PerkySloth · 2023-12-07 22:49 Yeah, if I wanted to give up on having a manual way to organize them, shiori was my top choice since it has the additional benefit of having a freebsd package, but the lack of manual organization means it'll often be slower to use for me which isn't ideal since I highly value efficiency. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zoredache · 2023-12-08 00:02 Several tools can sort by things other then just the last modification date, which happens to be the default. linkding you could have a tagged set of bookmarks sorted by the bookmark title. Then you could change the titles to be something that put them in an order you liked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iiiiiiiiiiip · 2023-12-08 00:11 Shiori development seems dead, browser extension has been dead for ages and no one seems to care, shame as it's very pleasing otherwise ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PerkySloth · 2023-12-08 00:24 Yeah but for that to work well, you'd need a way to order tags in a specific way in a selectable interface(cheating in naming them most likely with a prefix or something and sorting them by name) and be able to select multiple tags(hard to tell from the description if any of them support that) to simulate nested folders. If you have to type the tags to find them or if they're in a list that gets auto-sorted by an uncontrollable parameter, it'll be slower than selecting them from a known position in a list. It would be extra work to set it up but could work if any of them has a multi item selectable tag list you can sort alphabetically or manually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- New_d_pics · 2023-12-08 00:49 holy hell I hadn't come across archivebox as of yet, I'll definitely be spinning this up this eve. Is the UI comfortable enough to use as a "bookmark manager"? just been setting up [tubearchivist](https://github.com/tubearchivist/tubearchivist) for essentially this purpose, wondering if ArchiveBox would essentially do the same ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FL-MTL-ED · 2023-12-08 01:06 Its pretty amazing, I have only scratched the surface im sure. The UI has a compact mode by default and well honestly its not the greatest for quick bookmarking, its absolutely more dedicated to archival. Overall the UI is more function over form for sure, its not super intuitive compared to other solutions. The UI does have like a card mode with a screenshot of the archived page, and you can use the robust search/tags system. thats is probably better to use for bookmarking use rather than archiving. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FL-MTL-ED · 2023-12-08 01:07 It did have a release a few months ago, but Im not sure if its still being worked on. Fair point on the extension. It is quite nice to use so that does suck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FL-MTL-ED · 2023-12-08 01:12 Adding to that, for video archival it will work and it can play them back in the page. It uses YTDLP out the gate, but i will say its not the fastest downloading big videos out the box, but im sure there is probably a setting you change somewhere to help that out. I have not used tubearchivist but it does look interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shrolkar · 2023-12-08 01:18 ArchiveBox is something I didn't know I needed, thank you! I suspect op might be able to build a database on top of archivebox's own database backend to organize around tags? I personally would like to be able to sort by date and `grep` for content within that, because that's often how I remember visited websites. One could take this a step further and sort saved html `meta` tags for a very basic auto-tagging system, I'll bet! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FL-MTL-ED · 2023-12-08 01:48 I think you could actually do what you want with a homepage manager, something like this allows, 'folder' sections and then in there you can put as many as you want. all configured in yml. Its reasonably customizable with rows/columns. things would be shown exactly where you tell them to be. [https://github.com/gethomepage/homepage](https://github.com/gethomepa ge/homepage) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PerkySloth · 2023-12-08 02:55 The problem with that solution is that adding new bookmarks means editing the config file every time and that's not very convenient, doesn't seem like there's a way to do it from the web interface. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FL-MTL-ED · 2023-12-08 03:11 Fair, there are other similar homepage apps tho, I'm sure some of them would have a UI for it. this is just the one I use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nuvcmnee · 2023-12-08 07:02 I‘ve just migrated from Wallabag to Linkwarden because I feel like it‘s just much more responsive, not buggy and can be used as a read- later app as well as a bookmark manager with integrated archiving (although just as PDF or PNG and link to Internet Archive). I am very satisfied with Linkwarden. It does not have subfolders but can be organized by tags and collections. A link can have multiple tags but belongs to one collection. So I use as collection being the parent folder and tags the subfolders. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spaceman_Splff · 2023-12-12 00:20 Linkwarden and linkding are both really good options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PerkySloth · 2023-12-12 20:28 There seem to be many quite decent option, just not one that can do what I need apparently. I did play around shiori in a vm just to see the tag system at work and I may be able to work with it alone since it does allow to select multiple tags and exclude some the way I would expect it to work, but the tag selection system itself is not good enough to use fast. You're stuck having to manually erase a tag from the tag list if you want to unselect it rather than just clicking it again from the tag list of a specific result(or clicking the list on top, which isn't an option) and the separate tag selector being a separate popup isn't great since that's a couple extra click to use when it could simply always be shown on the main page on a side of the page. Also the lack of a more compact listing mean I'd have to use more specific tags which isn't ideal but not a deal breaker.
