Are there any wifi cameras that don't require an app to set up? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- burger4d · 2023-12-07 20:40 Foscam, Amcrest, Reolink, and Dahua seem to all require an app and account to set up a camera. I've just bought a Foscam and I even signed up for an account but I couldn't set up my camera cause the VLAN was not connected to the internet and it needs to register the camera with the server in order to set it up. Are there any companies out there that don't require an app/account to set up a wifi camera these days? I'm specifically looking for floodlight cameras for my backyard. I plan to put the camera on it's own non-internet connected VLAN and access it though Frigate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- x10000tacosx · 2023-12-07 21:00 Lorex wifi cameras also have an app but you can connect to the DVR from a local ip address. The app is mainly for viewing remotely and the initial setup. Their DVR only requires a local account but again can be connected to the app to view remotely but not required. I'm unaware of any wifi cameras that are 100% app free since it mainly uses the app to hand over the wifi credentials for your network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-07 21:38 Wrong sub. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NHarvey3DK · 2023-12-07 22:52 Why not just set them up initially, connected to the internet, and then move them to the right vlan? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chememjc · 2023-12-08 00:22 The easiest way I manged to do this was to make my own with a PocketBeagle and a USB camera module. (a Beaglebone Black or RPi would work as well) Probably not what you are looking for for an outdoor use case. Pine64 has an all-in-one module that runs linux ([Specs](https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/PineCube), [Buy](https://pine64.com/product/pinecube-dev-kit/)) but it would still need an enclosure. If they had any in stock, I would have gone that route for my project needs since $30 is pretty hard to beat for a 5MP camera. Both ways will give you plenty of control over the data stream. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MediocreMachine3543 · 2023-12-08 05:01 I’m not sure you’ll find many, if any, that don’t have an app for at least the set up. I’ve been using TP Link Tapo cameras. They have an RTSP stream and the app has been nice for remote viewing. After setting up the RTSP, you could block the camera from the internet and just view locally. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-08 05:31 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PalladianPorches · 2023-12-08 09:34 i got the tplink/tapo cheap ones on Amazon and they setup wifi with app, but once configured to the wifi network they can be isolated and uses rtsp streams without needing to ring home. unless you're going professional security, then this will mostly be the case with consumer wifi, unless you want to go down the flashing route. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-08 10:00 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- portalsystem · 2023-12-08 14:12 Search for câmeras with Onvif protocol. Do you can install in your DVR and IP access. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubbishdude · 2023-12-08 14:14 Hi, I also recently bought one. Have you followed a guide or something to set it up locally? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jay-Five · 2023-12-08 16:55 I have a Lorex system and this is what I did. (though mine is Analog and not IP based, with a DVR, it's the same setup). For self hosted, this is the way. The network is isolated locally. (I don't want any of my security data "in the cloud") ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-12-08 21:13 >I couldn't set up my camera cause the VLAN was not connected to the internet and it needs to register the camera with the server in order to set it up. Did you try just accessing the web interface directly via its IP? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plain-Tangerine3715 · 2023-12-09 16:58 I have 2 different reolink cameras and both allowed me to connect directly to the https interface on cameras to do setup and configuration. I never installed or used an app. I mostly have them stream to frigate, but I still use their built in web ui occasionally. They are blocked from lan (except frigate, ntp, dhcp) and blocked from wan and work fine. Even firmware upgrades work via a direct upload to the web interface. Might want to look at them again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- burger4d · 2023-12-09 23:36 Oh wow! Do you happen to know what model they are? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plain-Tangerine3715 · 2023-12-10 00:05 Sure RLC-510A RLC-811A ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-12 16:16 ## Post Removed Hey, burger4d!
