Winglang: New open-source programming language for faster and simpler cloud development reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shai-ber 路 2023-12-07 16:29 Hi self-hosters 馃憢 A group of dedicated contributors and myself are working on [Winglang](https://github.com/winglang/wing), a new programming language that reduces complexity and speeds up cloud development by allowing developers to work at a higher level of abstraction and test their applications locally with a fully functional simulator that provides instant feedback after code changes. Wing programs can be deployed to any cloud provider by changing the app's compilation target. # Key Features * Instant local simulation for visualizing, debugging, and testing apps without creating cloud mocks. * Cloud services and distributed computing as first-class language primitives. * Compiles to JavaScript and IaC (Terraform and Cloudformation, with support for more provisioning engines on the way). * Same code compiles to different clouds (AWS, GCP, Azure). * Compiler generates least-privilege IAM policies (and other cloud mechanics) based on intent. * [Compiler plugins](https://docs.winglang.io/blog/2023/02/17/plugins) for customizing the generated infrastructure definitions. * JavaScript interoperability. * Supports any Terraform resource. Check out this short [demo video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzqCXrsKWbo&t=661s) to see Winglang and its local simulation tools in action, as well as the compilation of the same code to different clouds and provisioning engines. # My Motivation As a developer, I've always felt that creating cloud applications should be easier. The process requires mastering various layers of the cloud stack, IAM roles, networking, and numerous tools, along with finding creative ways to test and debug code. In addition, long deployment times hinder iteration cycles and take me out of my creative flow. Other development disciplines have benefited from smart compilers that handle the lower levels of the stack and reduce developers' cognitive load. With Wing, we aim to bring the same benefits to cloud development with a language that treats the entire cloud as its target computer. # How to get Involved We'd love to hear your feedback on any aspect of the project, and we're looking for developers to join our community to help shape Winglang's future. If you find Winglang interesting, please [give us a 猸愶笍](https://github.com/winglang/wing) on GitHub to bring the project to the attention of more developers 馃檹. Your support is greatly appreciated! More Info You can find more info, including how to get started with Wing and why we're building it as a language, in our GitHub: [https://github.com/winglang/wing](https://github.com/winglang/wing). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wordyplayer 路 2023-12-07 18:32 I read the Amazon's new "Q*" will help setup AWS and write some code. If true, then I may finally be able to use AWS! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- raqisasim 路 2023-12-07 18:36 Why would a single-platform solution make a cross-platform solution obsolete? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shai-ber 路 2023-12-07 18:50 It can actually write code in Wing and then you can more easily understand it and debug it. Using the simulator, AI can also iterate on its code much more quickly ---------------------------------------------------------------------- duckofdeath87 路 2023-12-07 19:13 Anything that's AWS only automatically loses points in my book ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Altair12311 路 2023-12-07 22:31 that look like a really intersting project! well done :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shai-ber 路 2023-12-07 22:33 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2023-12-07 22:44 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UnsuitableRepository 路 2023-12-08 02:09 Interesting concept! Always up for tools that simplify cloud development. Checking out the demo now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reconditearrow42 路 2023-12-08 02:11 Easier cloud app creation is a goal worth pursuing. Consider me intrigued! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theutopianpoker37 路 2023-12-08 02:13 Cool to see a new programming language tackling cloud complexity. Will keep an eye on Winglang鈥檚 progress. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zn448sk39 路 2023-12-08 07:14 If I'm already using Pulumi/Terraform, does this have a place in my stack? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shai-ber 路 2023-12-08 08:05 Cool, I'd love to get any feedback you may have ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shai-ber 路 2023-12-08 08:08 Yes, because it's a layer above them, it's a language to describe both your application code and infra. It compiles to IaC (TF, CF, Pulumi) and JS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zn448sk39 路 2023-12-08 10:38 This feels super interesting, I will take a look at the demo video when I have the opportunity, haven't really wrapped my head around it from just reading. good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk 路 2023-12-12 16:17 ## Post Removed Hey, shai-ber!
